2Project Description
- Objective Develop materials, methods, and
criteria for rapid upgrade and construction of
contingency airfield aprons and taxiways. The
focus of these technologies is to rapidly
increase maximum-on-ground (MOG) ratings of
contingency airfields in order to increase
throughput capacity required by early entry
forces. - Scope - Includes research and field testing of
various matting systems, geosynthetics, and rapid
design techniques (e.g., CAPP model), and
integrating these with other JRAC technologies in
the areas of Site Selection, Enhanced
Construction, and Rapid Stabilization.

4Plan/Progress
- Plan
- FY02 Field evaluation of four helipad matting
systems. Select and purchase matting systems
for test sections. - FY03 Testing of matting systems at ERDC
Vicksburg in Hangar 4 test sections.
Evaluation and selection of C-130 capable
matting system(s) for FY04 JRAC Demonstration. - FY04 Evaluate combinations of matting systems,
soil stabilization, and geosynthetics.
Demonstration of matting system(s) at JRAC
Demonstration site. - FY05 Monitor performance at JRAC Demonstration
site. Testing of selected matting system(s)
with C-17 traffic. Develop rapid airfield MOG
enhancement design method. - Progress Hangar 4 test sections of matting
systems over high and moderate strength
subgrade support completed. Anticipate
completion of all test section evaluations by
mid-September, 2003.

10Product
- Description Guidance on various materials and
techniques available for use in upgrading and
construction of contingency airfield aprons and
taxiways, including recommendations to purchase
certain types and volumes of matting systems.
Guidance will address unique issues of speed of
construction, slow-rolling and static loads, and
geometric requirements. - FY04 Demonstration Construction/expansion of
C-130 capable parking apron using the matting
system(s) selected from FY03 test section
evaluation. - Transition Medium Criteria for Rapid MOG
Enhancement will be embedded in the JRAC software
package, and will include structural design,
geometric design, and construction materials and
techniques specific to aprons and taxiway
systems. Specifications for the purchase of at
least several different types of matting systems
will also be produced.
