Safety in the Science Laboratory
  • A Guide to Success in the Laboratory
  • Mrs. Guilliams
  • Rm A-16 THS

4
Accidents happen every day in many activities.
Statistically, most accidents happen in the home
or while driving a car.
Few accidents have occurred in the science
classroom. However, in order to decrease the
chances of any accidents occurring, all students
and visitors to the science lab are required to
follow the safety procedures that will follow.
5
  • Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all
    times.
  • Follow all written and verbal instructions
    carefully.

One
6
Never Perform an unauthorized experiment. Many
chemicals emit dangerous gases or may explode if
combined.
Two
Never conduct experiments in the laboratory alone.
7
When entering a lab, do not touch any equipment,
chemicals or other materials until you are
instructed to do so.
Three
8
  • Do not eat food, drink beverages, or chew gum in
    the laboratory.

NEVER
eat or drink from lab equipment.
NEVER taste chemicals for any reason.
Four
9
  • Horseplay, running, pushing, shoving, and
practical jokes are a serious hazard in the
science lab. There are many glass objects and
chemicals which could be damaged or could injure
you. Such behavior is not permitted.

Five
10
Good Housekeeping
  • Good housekeeping is essential in maintaining a
    safe lab.
  • Work areas should be kept clean and tidy.
  • All work surfaces in the laboratory should be
cleaned after each use with water.

11
Good Housekeeping
  • Bring only your laboratory instructions,
worksheets, and/or reports to the work area.
  • Make sure that you place all backpacks in the
desk seat and push outer desk to the inside.

12
  • Know the location of all the exits.
  • Locate the nearest sink and shower.
  • Know the location of the fire extinguisher, fire
blanket, and eye washes. Your teacher will point
these out to you before doing any lab activities.

13
  • Be alert and proceed with caution!!
  • Notify your instructor immediately of any
  • unsafe conditions
  • Dispose of all chemicals properly.
  • Never mix chemicals in sink drains.
  • Sinks are to be used only for water and those
  • Solutions designated by the instructor.

14
Hygienic Care
Wash hands after lab. Keep hands away from face
and mouth.
15
  • Experiments must be personally monitored.
  • Do not wander around the room, distract other
students, or interfere with the laboratory
    experiments of others.

16
Students are never permitted in the chemistry
supply room!!
17
Goggles must be worn when engaging in or
observing activities involving potential hazards
to the eye.
18
Dress properly during a laboratory activity.
  • Long hair must be tied back during lab.
  • Dangling jewelry and loose or baggy clothing must
    be secured.
  • Shoes must completely cover the foot. No
    sandals/flip flops.

19
Accidents and Injuries
Report all accidents and injuries to your teacher
immediately. Dont be afraid to tell the teacher
of an accident because you broke a rule. The
threat of infection or other side effects of the
accident are more important than the reprimand
the teacher may give you for breaking the rules.
20
Accidents and Injuries
If you or your lab partner are hurt, immediately
yell out, Code one, Code one to get the
instructors attention.
21
Accidents and Injuries
If a chemical splashes in your eye(s) or on your
skin, immediately flush with running water for at
least 20 minutes. Notify someone immediately.
22
Chemical Safety
All chemicals in the laboratory are to be
considered dangerous. Never taste. Dont eat or
drink in lab. Label all bottles containing
chemicals. Never transfer substances with mouth
pipette. Never return unused chemicals to
original container.
23
Chemicals
  • Check the label on the chemical bottle at least
twice before removing any of the contents.
  • Take only as much chemical as you need.

24
Handling Chemicals
  • NEVER return unused chemicals to their original
    containers!!

Opps! too much Ill just put it back.
25
  • When transferring reagents hold the container
    away from your body.
  • When pouring use a stirring rod to control the
    flow of the liquid.
  • ALWAYS add acid to water!!!

26
  • Take great care in noting odors or fumes. Use a
wafting motion of the hand. NEVER put a bottle
to your nose and breathe deeply.

27
  • Never try to pick up broken glass. It should be
    swept up carefully.
  • Broken glass in sinks should be promptly removed
as it presents a serious hazard to all using the
sink. Notify your teacher when this happens.

Get your teacher!
28
Never force glass tubing or thermometers into
rubber stoppers.
When alcohol is heated, it must be in a water
bath in such a way that the container holding the
alcohol is below the top of the water bath
container.
29
  • Fill wash bottles only with distilled water and
    use only as intended.

30
Procedural Safety
  • Never allow the open end of a heated test tube to
    be pointed toward anyone.
  • When heating materials by means of a gas flame,
the glassware should be protected from direct
contact with the flame through the use of a wire
    gauze.
  • Never touch any heating equipment or recently
heated glassware. It may not look hot, but could
    burn you badly.

31
  • Never heat a closed container. The stopper could
    act as a projectile.
  • Make certain that all hot plates and open burners
are turned off when leaving the laboratory.

32
Excessive talking keeps the instructor from
hearing when someone could be injured. Please
refrain from talking loudly during lab.
Talk quietly.
In case of emergency-DO NOT RUN. Leave by the
nearest safe exit. DO NOT SCREAM OR YELL.
Screaming will only create confusion.
33
Follow all instructions given by your instructor.

Laboratory activities can be exciting, fun and
safe.
Everyone is responsible for keeping the
laboratory a safe environment in which to learn.
34
Chemical symbols
  • The safety captain will place the appropriate
  • placard on the board. The following are
  • placards that are available.

35
FIRE Safety
Hair back, sleeves up, goggles on. Keep all
papers away from fire source. NEVER put anything
in fire that you are not told to do so.
36
HEAT BURN Hazard
Properly light Bunsen burners. Turn off all
heating devices when not in use. Heat tubes and
beakers on a ring stand with wire gauze. Store
hot liquids in heat resistant substances. Turn
off gas when not in use.
37
SHARPS Hazard
Will not use often but be careful anytime
glassware or sharp materials are used. Always
carry sharps so that the sharp point is pointed
towards the floor.
38
CHEMICAL Safety
Always be sure the you know the hazards of EVERY
chemical you are using. NEVER ingest chemicals
and ALWAYS wash your hands before leaving lab.
39
GLASSWARE Hazard
Check condition of glassware before and after
use. Air-dry glassware. Do not pick up broken
glassware with bare hands. Never force glass
tubing into rubber stopper. Never place glass
near edges.
40
ELECTRICAL Safety
Never plug in equipment before you are ready to
use it. Plugs are under/near sinks make sure you
are careful using water and electricity at the
same time.
41
POISON Hazard
Never ingest chemicals in lab. Dont touch
chemicals with your bare hands unless instructed
to do so. ALWAYS wash your hands before leaving
lab!
42
EYE FACE Safety
Always wear goggles when instructed to do so.
Goggles must be over eyes as your eyes are WAY
more important than your neck, forehead, or back
of your head.

44
Proper Waste Disposal
Clean up. Follow the teachers directions
regarding proper procedures. Dispose of broken
glass properly. Dispose of hazardous wastes
properly.
45
Safety Counts
Playing in the lab is serious business. If you
think the rules are stupid, read these accounts,
and realize just how dangerous not following the
rules can be.
46
  • You and your parents MUST sign the safety
contract in order for you to do labs in class.
  • Any student violating safety rules will earn a
ZERO as the lab or activity grade and will be
forced to sit out the lab.
  • Labs are fun and make science much more
interesting, but can be dangerous if safety rules
    are not followed.
