  • The NB/PEI Educational Computer Network
(ECN), founded in 1970, connects all the of
universities in the eastern Canadian provinces of
New Brunswick (NB) and Prince Edward Island
    (PEI).

The Canadian Internet Timeline
  • "1970 October New Brunswick Educational Computer
Network is formed, and later renamed the New
    Brunswick/Prince Edward Island Educational
    Network. It is still operating."
  • This quote is the very first entry in printed in
the "Canadian Internet Handbook", 1995 edition,
by Jim Carroll and Rick Broadhead, published by

22
NB/PEI Research Grid
  • The NB/PEI Research Grid is a cooperative effort
to provide a highly reliable research network
backbone to Atlantic Canada, and to significantly
upgrade and expand the capacity for regional
research and education in New Brunswick and
    Prince Edward Island.
  • The initiative is in direct response to the need
    institutions of higher education, research
facilities and private companies in the region
have to increase bandwidth so they can
collaborate, and participate in research and
    innovation projects regionally, nationally and
    globally.
  • ECN 3 x 1Gb rings for a little more than the
price of the existing, overloaded 30Mb network.
  • 1,000,000 x faster than the original 1970
    network.

23
CANARIEAUPs RE focus
  • The CAnet 4 network is provided to advance the
deployment of the information society in Canada
through the support of research, education and
advanced application development and usage among
    Canadian research, education and industry
organizations. The network is provided to support
those activities that would not be practical to
develop or deploy on the existing Internet
    infrastructure.
  • The CAnet 4 Acceptable Use Policy(AUP) is an
"institutional" AUP. Once an institution is
approved access to the CAnet 4 network, then ALL
of its traffic that is destined to other approved
institutions connected to the network is deemed
eligible to be carried on the CAnet 4 network.
  • All organizations that connect to CAnet 4
through a CANARIE approved GigaPOP must maintain
a separate link to the commercial Internet.

24
NB ORAN AUP
  • The Atlantic Canada Research Network (ACRN) is
provided to advance the deployment of the
information society in New Brunswick and Nova
Scotia through the support of research, education
and advanced application development and usage
    among research, education and industry
organizations. The network is provided to support
those activities that would not be practical to
develop or deploy on commercial infrastructure.
