Purpose

Challenge without Risk?
  • Why do people go on fairground rides?
  • Why do people parachute, abseil, cave, go-kart,
    etc.?
  • They want the adrenalin rush of taking risks.

5
Scouting and Risk
  • We aim to be challenging,
  • to give a sense of achievement,
  • where the risks are understood,
  • and we know the young people are safe.
  • We want them to experience and understand risk
    too.

6
Three key risks
  • Physical harm,
  • Opportunity for abuse,
  • Accusation of abuse.

7
What is abuse?
  • Sexual,
  • Physical,
  • Mental,
  • Psychological,
  • Discrimination.

8
Whats important?
  • Sort the statements into order of importance.

9
Orange Card
  • Protects young people,
  • Protects you.

10
Scenarios
11
What do you do if.
  • A young person tells you about abuse outside
    Scouting?
  • A young person accuses another leader of abuse?
  • You are accused?

12
Work as a team
  • If you think you are going to be alone with a
young person, ask another leader to come too or
    watch,
  • If you see another leader getting into a
situation can you protect them by moving or
    watching?

13
Risk Assessments
  • What are the risks?
  • How likely are they?
  • What harm might occur?
  • How can you minimise the risks?
  • Do all the leaders know is it written down?

14
The big change!
  • You are no longer members of the section,
  • You are part of the Leadership team,
  • Beavers, Cubs and Scouts will follow your
    example,
