6
Gender
  • Acknowledge each student
  • Provide feedback
  • Examples Females are the majority in Elementary
Education males are the majority in Applied Math
    and Statistics

7
Age
  • The average age of an undergraduate student at
    FAU is 25 years old.
  • These nontraditional undergraduate students will
    have jobs, family responsibilities, financial
strains and other issues that may impact their
    education.

8
Sexual Orientation
  • Lesbian, Homosexual, and Transgender individuals
exist outside of just the Gay community, and in
fact, they exist in all communities, whether rich
    or poor.
  • As a Teaching Assistant, it is extremely
important that you bring a feeling of belonging
and welcome to all students in your classrooms.
  • How you act towards all your students will set
the stage for respect and dignity in your
    classroom.
  • Always try to bring the students humanity to the
    table.

9
Religion
  • There are many religions that will not be
familiar or common within your classroom.
  • Help students understand the importance of their
religion to them and their family. Religion
remains part of people both internally and
    externally.
  • Each religion comes with certain philosophy ideas
and goals for their members. It would be
beneficial to you, as a Teaching Assistant, to
become familiar with at least 4 different kinds
    or types of religion.

10
Classroom Tools
  • Use nametags for all students from the first day
    of class.
  • Do group work, provide time to meet in the
classroom setting, and allow for group
    presentations.
  • Try to have frequent teacher day, in which
  • students become the teacher.
  • Have students do PowerPoint
  • presentations for their final grades.
