Introduction to Project
Our Goal
  • Create a buoyant, but strong concrete mix that
    can be used by ASCE for future concrete canoe
    competitions.

Procedure for Design
  • Gathered information using previous years canoes
    and ideas borrowed from other universitys teams.
  • Calculated preliminary parameters that the mixes
    would need to meet
  • Investigated alternative materials for each mix

Testing Procedure
  • Three tests were performed
  • Split Test
  • Compressive Test
  • Bending Test

Split Test
  • Using the universal testing machine we split the
    cylinders.

Compressive Test
  • We again used the universal testing machine, this
    time in the compression test

Bending Test
  • For the bending test we created a simply
    supported beam.
  • We then loaded the beam using the 2.5 loading
    device.

What These Tests Tell Us
  • Mix 1 offers both buoyancy and strength.
  • Mix 2 though not as buoyant is the strongest.
  • Mix 3 is the most buoyant, but has less strength.

Conclusion
  • Given these results Mix 1 is the mix we felt
    would currently be the most effective for use on
    the concrete canoe.
  • However, with some minor modifications any of the
    three mixes would be not only sufficient but
    competitive with other university teams.

Future Considerations
  • The next competition is in April, as a result we
    will be able to

- Take these results and redesign the
mixtures. - Retest then redesign until
satisfied.
