2
Wheels and Transportation
  • This webquest is designed for Kindergarteners.
This will be an interactive and informative, and
fun learning experience for them. Throughout this
webquest they will learn about buses, trucks,
    cars, tractors, trains, and wagons.

3
Buses
  • Buses are used to transport children and adults
    to and from school.
  • The first school bus was introduced in 1827 by
George Shillibear and was designed to seat 25
    passengers.
  • A full size bus can hold up to 59 to 90
    passengers.

4
School Bus Safety
  • School bus safety is very important to know. Here
are some safety tips when riding the bus to
    school.
  • Be at the school bus on time.
  • Wait in a safe place back from the edge of the
    road.
  • Do not play on ditches or snow banks.
  • Enter the bus in a single file holding the rail.
  • Find a seat right away and stay seated facing
    forward at all times.
  • Do not place things in the aisle.
  • Keep your arms and head inside the bus.
  • Always follow the bus drivers instructions.
  • When leaving the bus, move away from the side.
  • If you drop something near the bus, never try to
pick it up. Ask an adult or the bus driver for
    help.

5
School Bus Safety
  • When crossing the street to get on or off the
    bus
  • Walk at least 10 big steps in front of the bus,
along the side of the road and look at the driver
    for a signal before crossing.
  • Look all ways before crossing the road.
  • Walk, never run, to where your parent or
caregiver is waiting for you on the side of the
    road by the bus stop.

6
Why are school buses yellow?
  • Did you ever wonder why school buses are yellow?
    They are painted a yellow-orange
color(officially known as National School Bus
Chrome Yellow) for purposes of visibility and
safety. The color was selected because the black
lettering was the easiest to see on the color
yellow in the early morning. Yellow also gets
your attention faster then any other color on the
road. If there is bad weather, drivers will be
able to see yellow buses on the road.

7
Can You Spot the School Bus?
  • See if you can look at the picture and spot the
    school bus.
  • Here is a hint its yellow!

truck comes from the Greek trochos, meaning
    wheel.

called a wrecker, a breakdown truck, and a

broken down or have been in an accident.

13
Pickup Trucks
  • These are Pickup Trucks. Pickup trucks are light
vehicles with an open top, rear cargo area. The
first pickup was made in 1925 and sold for 281.
Henry Ford built it as the Ford Model T Runabout
with Pickup Body. These trucks are suitable for
hauling heavy loads and performing other
    functions.

14
Fire Trucks
  • These are Fire trucks. Fire trucks are used for
    assisting in fighting fires, transporting
firefighters to the scene, and providing them
with access, water or other equipment. Fire
trucks pump water through a hose to put out
fires. Fire trucks have a turntable ladder that
helps them bring water to fires that may be up
    high and out of reach.

15
Dump Trucks
  • These are Dump trucks. They are used for
transporting loose material like sand, gravel, or

to cultivate the soil, sowing the weeds, and
harvesting the crops. The tractor is the most
important machine on the farm. It does all the
heavy work in preparing the soil for crops.

21
Tractors
  • Tractors smooth the dirt by breaking up large
clumps of soil after the field has been plowed. It
is also used to clear out dead, matted grass in
    the spring.

22
Tractors
  • A tractor is a very heavy machine. It weighs 7
tons and has the same pulling power as 200
horses. It has four wheels to keep it steady on
the ground. The giant wheels and tires have deep
treads to stop it from slipping or getting stuck
    in the mud.
