5Overview of Civic Engagement
the model for Communiversity, an institution
that sees its future tied to the community that
it serves and a community that sees its future
growth and development enhanced by the presence
of the University. (Excerpted from the Strategic
Plan and quoted in the institutional proposal)
6Overview of Civic Engagement
- CSUDH holds that the University has a
responsibility to support students by -
- Deepening students understanding of and
commitment to democratic citizenship in a
multicultural society through participation in
community activities. -
- Providing opportunities for students to Interact
with each other, learn from each other, grow with
each other, and together make their communities
more than the sum of their parts. - (Adapted from Ehrlichs and Deweys definition
of Civic Engagement).
7 Civic Engagement Community Survey (SG4) Major
Findings and Recommendations
8SG4
Major Finding 1 CSU, Dominguez Hills is less
well recognized in its community than might be
expected, given its 45 year history as the only
publicly funded comprehensive university in the
Greater South Bay Region. Recommendations The
University should expand and make more systematic
its outreach to and interaction with chambers of
commerce, service organizations, and industry
organizations in its service area. The
University should increase the involvement of
members of the community in University activities
by expanding its use of advisory boards for
academic programs and administrative units, and
drawing on more community members to serve on
these boards.
9SG4
Major Finding 2 Although the campus does face
recognition problems, respondents to the survey
have a favorable impression of the University,
particularly alumni and those who have
participated in certain university programs and
services. Recommendations The University should
take steps to review its image in the community
with the assistance of an objective external
reviewer. The University should expand its
services to potential employers of its graduates,
particularly by increasing the scope and
resources of its student career services
activities and programs.
10SG4
Major Finding 3 CSU, Dominguez Hills graduates
are making a positive contribution to the
regional workforce, and are a potential resource
to the University to support efforts to extend
its influence and impact within the region. The
Universitys alumni are an important resource in
drawing the University and the communities that
it serves closer together. Recommendation The
University should mobilize its graduates who live
in the communities that make up its service area
to create local alumni affinity groups whose
purpose would be to make the University more
known to the community and a more integral part
of the local social and economic fabric.
11SG4
Major Findings 4, 5 Many in the South Bay
consider the University to be an important
resource and partner in addressing regional
issues and developing solutions to problems.
There appears to be an opportunity to expand the
Universitys activities in the areas of
specialized training and internships. Recommendat
ions As the University moves to create an entity
that provides research and consulting services to
business, industry, labor governments, education,
and non-profit and faith-based groups, the entity
should be designed to include community
representation in its governance structure, and
its objectives should include the provision of
low-cost services to the community through
linkages with faculty and students in campus
academic programs. The University should
systematically collect existing data about needs
for specialized training and internships in the
Greater South Bay Region, and develop programs
and internship opportunities in cooperation with
representatives of the areas of highest need.
12SG4
Major Finding 6 Survey respondents would support
the development or expansion of academic programs
at CSU, Dominguez Hills in the areas of
management, engineering and technology,
health-related, and education. Such programs
should be designed with consideration to assuring
strong outcomes in basic skills areas and in the
skills that are necessary for graduates to be
successful in the workplace. Recommendation The
University should consider expanding its
offerings and academic programs in management,
engineering and technology, health-related, and
education. As new programs are designed and
implemented, or existing ones are expanded, the
faculty who create them should give consideration
to assuring strong outcomes in basic skills areas
and in the skills that are necessary for
graduates to be successful in the workplace.
