What is the Internet?

• The Internet is the worlds largest computer
  network.
• A computer network is a communication system
  created by connecting many computers
• Networks, including the Internet, allow two-way
  communication between any two computers on the
  network
• The Internet is made up of networks established
  by private companies, universities, and
  government agencies.
• The Internet is a supernetwork that connects many
  individual networks into a huge system

Where did the Internet begin?

• In the 1960s, the United States Department of
  Defense set up an experimental computer network
  to connect government agencies with universities
  and private companies that were doing military
  research
• This network grew rapidly, and it included an
  important feature that rerouted messages if one
  part of the network failed.
• By the late 1980s, universities all over the
  United States were connecting their computers and
  sharing information over networks

World Wide Web

• The World Wide Web is the part of the Internet
  that allows users to connect to computers all
  over the world.
• The Web consists of millions of pages that
  include text and pictures, and may include sound
  and video.
• This such page can be any length, and the first
  page of a web site is called the home page.

Using The Internet Safely

• Be safety conscious.
• Dont give out your full name, address, or phone
  number to people you chat with online.
• If you receive a message over the Internet that
  makes you feel uncomfortable tell your teacher
  immediately.

Electronic Mail

• Messages sent over the Internet are known as
  e-mail. This is one of the most popular uses of
  the Internet.
• In order to receive electronic mail you need to
  have a e mail address yourself.
• When you receive e-mail, you can decide what to
  with the message. You can read it and then delete
  it, or you can file it for later use.
• Also you can print the message that you receive.
  You can also reply to the message or forward it
  to someone else.

Common Usage
There is an advantage for people who chat online
especially poor typists, because there is a way
to shorten phrases

• BTW ( by the way)
• LOL ( laugh out loud)
• OTOH ( on the other hand)
• TIA ( thanks in advance)
• VBG ( very big grin)
• BRB ( be right back)
