Methodology of Research
  • A South-African Building Renaissance

5
Research Hypothesis
Proper research and development can make earth
construction an acceptable and sustainable
alternative to conventional techniques (It can
even make earth construction a standard building
method. It will help the poorest of the poor to
acquire housing of a better quality)
6
Methodology
  1. Desk research on causal relationships
  2. Sampling (selection of target communities)
  3. Acceptability Model
  4. Pre-intervention assessment
  5. Intervention (Workshops)
  6. Post-intervention assessment
  7. Conclusion

7
Acceptability Model
  1. Criteria for target communities
  2. Comparison (i) Building with corrugated iron
sheets plastic (worse, but earth building is
just as cheap) (ii) Building with concrete
blocks (just as good, but earth building is
    cheaper)
  3. Desk research questionnaire data
  4. Transform to normality when needed
  5. Perform Principal Component Analysis to unveil
    associations
  6. Pinpoint causal relationships
  7. Predict acceptability, showing the best
    interventions to increase acceptability
