Large Displacement Facility for Testing Lifeline
Systems

• Lifelines consist of systems for conveyance of
  electric power, gas and liquid fuels,
  telecommunications, transportation arteries and
  bridges, and water supply lines, all of which are
  critical for our sustained existence. The
  experimental facility at Cornell University
  focuses on testing and simulation of lifelines
  under large transient and permanent deformations
  caused by earthquakes. The facility provides the
  capability to simulate large earthquake-induced
  motions and to evaluate the effects of these
  motions on the behavior of buried pipelines and
  other underground facilities and also other
  aboveground structural components. This project
  is directed by Professor H. E. Stewart and funded
  through NSFs George E. Brown, Jr. Network for
  Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES), award
  number CMS-0217366.
