GMDI
  • GREENSTONE MINERAL DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE
  • Mission
  • To compile and digitize existing data into
    useable formats.
  • To produce a fully functional 3D model based on
    available data.
  • To identify and devise methods to overcome
    limitations in the 3D modeling.
  • To identify new and unique methods for display
and use of the models and data.

DCDP
  • DATA COMPILATION AND DIGITIZATION PROJECT

GMDI is limited by the lack of useable data and
time/skill restraints of converting existing
data. DCDP is a separate system which in turn
could feed data to the GMDI
  • Mission
  • Expand human capital
  • To compile and digitize existing data into
    useable formats.
  • To employee local people
  • To provide meaningful digital output to whoever
    needs it
  • To drive new data collection initiatives
  • To enhance the geological database

Knowledge
6
Skills
The learned capacity to carry out pre-determined
results often with the minimum outlay of time,
energy, or both. Skills can often be divided
into domain-general and domain-specific skills.
  • Domain-general
  • Inherent Skills/ innate abilities.
  • Easily transferable from job to job
  • Most dont consider these skills at all.
  • Examples
  • - Attention to detail
  • - Problem solving
  • - Spatial awareness
  • Domain-Specific
  • Learned Skills
  • Become inherent
  • with use
  • Some are transferable
  • Examples
  • - Riding a bike
  • - Repetitive tasks
  • - Math

Skills

Knowledge
Expertise, and skills acquired by a person
through experience or education
Teach New skills, redefine existing skills And
provide experience to develop those skills
Knowledge
A little knowledge that acts is worth infinitely
more than much knowledge that is idle.
- Kahlil Gibran

workforce with the necessary skills in place, all
thats needed is the knowledge.

Existing Data
  • Private Sector Datasets
  • Established contacts with the private sector
permits GEDC to obtain private sector datasets
which in turn provides access to technology not
readily available to the junior companies.
  • This partnership produces a focused approach to
developing marketing tools for the Mining Sector.

readily available to the junior companies.

  • Public Sector Datasets
  • There is a large amount of under utilized data
available through the Ministry of Northern
Development and Mines Geoscience Data Portal and
    the MNDM library.
  • This data will show trends between properties to
entice further investment to these focus areas.

Paper
  • A Problem
  • Existing information (PDF) is NOT data. It is
paper or a paper equivalent, not true data.
  • Existing historical information is typically in
poor condition and not easily convertible into
    useable data.
  • Data is spread all over the place, and some has
    long since disappeared.

Paper
Some information is only available via hand drawn
maps/cross sections, etc.
14
Converting to Data
Computer aided digitization Utilizing computer
technology in new and innovative methods allows
for efficient and cost effective conversion to
data. Method of digitization is based on the
information and quality of the information to be
converted.
15
Converting to Data
3D-model input Computer can only understand
first 5 columns, last column is to abstract.
  • Computers need some help
  • They can only recognize anything beyond yes or no
    (on/off, 1/0).
  • Anything a computer doesnt recognize is an
    error.
  • Data has to be presented into the computer with
as little error and in a form it can understand.

Data
  • Data stored in obscure or proprietary formats
does not lend itself to longevity. A long-lived,
stable file format is essential when archiving
and disseminating the data for future
    functionality.

    can happen.

Data to Value
The Goldcorp Challenge
In 2000, as the CEO of Toronto-based Goldcorp
Inc., Mr. McEwen ran a contest that laid out the
geological data of the company's moribund Red
Lake Mine in Northern Ontario and invited all
takers to have a crack at finding its richest
gold deposits. The process, made possible by the
Internet and advanced computer software, was
novel in scientific circles -- not to mention
unheard of in the tight-lipped mining industry --
and it worked, producing what is today the
world's richest gold mine. The Globe and Mail

The Leitch Model
2006/2007 Data from the Leitch mine was
digitized utilizing various techniques. A simple
model was created showing basic drill holes,
mineral envelopes and underground workings. Much
data is missing. Model still functional as a
marketing device and is featured in multiple
marketing information packages. Shows the
potential of such models strictly for marketing
purposes.

3D Modeling
3D modeling is the process of developing a
mathematical, wireframe representation of any
three-dimensional object (either inanimate or
living) via specialized software. This requires
useable data.
3D modeling becomes a powerful tool, not just as
a display medium, but more importantly as a tool
for data conversion and data outputs for
interpretation.
27
3D Modeling
  • Standard 3D modeling
  • 3D visualizations of ore bodies/workings
  • Ore body grade/tonnage estimates
  • 2D cross-sections
  • Rock mechanics
  • Mine Planning
  • Unique 3D modeling
  • Google earth 3D model integration
  • Direct data retrieval from model
  • Virtual reality
  • Data conversion (logs)

28
Beyond Conversion/Compilation
29
New Data Initiatives
Geophysics data Currently data sharing
agreements with the following companies will
allow GEDC to display high resolution geophysics
for key areas in Greenstone. It is hoped
that this will drive further exploration on
adjoining properties and by sharing data will
start a flow of ideas from person to person and
company to company.
30
New Data Initiatives
Structural Study Currently GEDC is working on
funding for a belt-wide geological structural
study. This will involve the OGS, data from
area companies and a yet to be determined
geologist to put it all together. It is our hope
that this study will also lead to new exploration
within the Greenstone region.
31
Virtual Reality
Utilizing the built in VR capabilities of
datamine, as well as portable VR equipment from
Datamine GEDC hopes to provide not only training
for local workers, but a marketing tool for local
companies to pursue financing for future
exploration and projects.
32
The Geological Database
The geological database is the combined data and
knowledge in regards to the Geology of an area.
By expanding the geological database, our
understanding of the gold deposits of Greenstone
increases. By increasing our understanding,
exploration targeting and mine determination
become more efficient.
All data produced within the DCDP adds to the
geological database.
33
The Knowledge Economy
All of this will allow Greenstone workers access
to the Knowledge Economy in a unique and specific
way.
34
Who Benefits?
Local jobs - increased human capital
(sustainable jobs) Mining/exploration companies
locally - Marketing (google earth) -
Drill/exploration targeting Mining companies
globally - Marketing (google earth) links to
local jobs - Understanding deposits (geological
database) Geological database - Data brought
to light (patents, old data) - Allows computers
to enhance the data
