  • If not used properly, chain saws can have deadly
    potential

  • Chain saws do not only injure people by cutting
    them
  • You must carefully observe the situation in which
    you will use the saw
  • Many people are killed after being struck with a
    tree or causing a collapse of some sort

OSHA Regulations
  • OSHA has regulations on what to do before
    starting the chain saw as well as while running
    the saw

1910.266(e)(1)- Before starting the saw
  • Check all parts of the saw
  • Fuel the saw at least 10 from sources of
    ignition
  • Start saw 10 from fueling area, with chain break
    engaged, on the ground
  • Make sure you use an approved fuel container as
    specified by 1910.266(d)(9)

1910.266(e)(2)- While running the saw
  • Keep hands on the handles and maintain secure
    footing
  • Keep surrounding area and exit path clear of
    obstacles
  • Do not cut overhead
  • Shut off or release throttle before leaving
  • Shut off or engage chain break if walking more
    than 50 or if on hazardous ground

    after being cut

    planning to make, and plan accordingly
  • Have someone nearby to assist you in any
    hazardous event
