1Domestic Sustainability
- How to make House and Home more Sustainable.
2Domestic Sustainability
- Sustainability is the ability to carry out an
activity or a process in such a way as to
conserve ecological balance and avoid depleting
resources.
3Domestic Sustainability
- Problem is current system is linear.
- We take a resource, use it and then throw it away.
4Domestic Sustainability
- Need to go from this linear system
- Resource Production Use
Waste
To this circular system Resource Waste
Production Use
5Domestic Sustainability
- There are three key features that I will look at
- Water
- Waste
- Warmth (Energy)
6Domestic Sustainability
- For the first time in history, urban demand for
water is outpacing farm demand, as city users
outbid irrigators. By 2050 cities will consume
half the worlds fresh water reducing that
available for food production by a third. - From The Coming Famine http//www.policypoint

- Waste (from a BBC report a few years ago)
- The UK disposes of more than 27m tonnes of waste
to landfill each year - 7m more than any other
country, the Local Government Association (LGA)
says. - An area the size of Warwick - 109 sq miles - is
now landfill and landfill space could run out in
2016. - After the UK, Italy is next with 20m tonnes,
followed by Spain (17m), France (13m) and Germany
(10m). Germany has a 25 larger population as
well. - From http//news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6238357.stm

stations is wasted through inefficient
generation, transmission, and end use. (James
Bruges, 2007, The Big Earth Book - There are approximately 26m homes in Britain,
most of them as well insulated as a rabbit hutch,
most of which will still be in existence in 2050.
And those homes are responsible for around 27 of
Britain's carbon emissions. - From http//www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2009
