Title: Warrenville Road Reconstruction Project

1
Warrenville RoadReconstruction Project
  • Permeable Concrete Brick Pavers

2
Phase I Completed
3
Scope of Project
  • Approximately 1-mile stretch of residential
roadway reconstructed from a rural cross section
    to an urban cross section
  • Project construction in three phases over a
    3-year period
  • Phase I constructed in 2007 - 1600 linear feet
  • Phase II construction in 2008 - 1300 linear feet
  • Phase III construction in 2009 - 2000 linear feet
  • Estimated total project cost - 4,700,000.00
  • Warrenville Road is considered a community
    collector street

9
Benefits of Permeable Brick System
  • Reduced or eliminated storm water runoff from
    pavement surface
  • Filtration of rain water prior to entering
    sub-drain storm sewer
  • Storm water detention
  • Road surface not susceptible to the freeze/thaw
    cycle
  • No ponding of water on the surface
  • Traffic calming
  • Charm and character
  • Acceptance by long-time residents

10
Cost ComparisonAsphalt versus Permeable Bricks
  • Costs can vary significantly from project to
    project.
  • Warrenville Road retrofit (rural to urban) was
designed with a storm sewer sized to accommodate
    a 10-year average rainfall event.
  • Warrenville Road was constructed with a
    structural number of 3.7
  • 15 increase of a project comparison
  • 60 increase on a surface to surface comparison

11
Lessons Learned - Benefits
  • Traffic calming effect much more significant than
    anticipated
  • Long-time residents accepting of such a drastic
    change
  • Permeability benefits much greater than
anticipated low areas do not collect water
  • No freeze/thaw cycle adds to the long-term
    structure of the roadway
  • Aesthetic value high
  • Leadership of community recognized

12
Lessons Learned - Challenges
  • Not easy for snow and ice to melt because salt
    brine drains into cracks
  • Heat from ground (as predicted) does not keep
    road clear of ice
  • Steel plow must be used
  • Some grass growing between cracks
  • Sweeper must be a vacuum technology, not just a
    brush

13
Advice
  • This is a significantly different type of roadway
in terms of cost, aesthetics, function and
    project length
  • Take the time to work with the residents
  • Share information
  • Have public meetings
  • Answer questions
  • Walk the road

14
Phase II Completed
15
Ripple Effect
  • Sequestria Subdivision 11 homes, 2000
    cul-de-sac
  • School District new middle school parking lot
    100 spaces
