The Practice of Baptism
  • Most religious bodies practice some form or
    ordinance they call baptism
  • In order to become a member you must submit to
    there baptism
  • Baptism is an important subject
  • No matter your position youll have to make up
your mind about baptism and decide if it
    satisfies God

4
Can we understand Baptism?
If my mind were unsettled in regard to baptism,
I would take this course I would take my own New
Testament, and, beginning at the first chapter of
Matthew, I would read it all the way through,
watching for that word baptism and everywhere
I found it, I would examine carefully the passage
in which I found it, and learn all I could about
it and when I got through, I would put all of
this together, and I would make up my mind on the
whole subject of baptism that way. Then I would
feel sure that it was God teaching me, and that
he would approve my decision.
  • Some say
  • Unimportant
  • Need to know Greek
  • Bible is unclear
  • Today we will
  • See the importance of Baptism
  • See it in our own language
  • See the simplicity of Biblical teaching

5
The Book of Matthew
6
Matt 35-6
  • Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea,
and all the region round about Jordan, And were
baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

7
Matt 311
  • I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance
but he that cometh after me is mightier than I,
whose shoes I am not worthy to bear he shall
baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire

8
Matt 313-16
  • Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto
John, to be baptized of him. But John forbad
him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee,
and comest thou to me? And Jesus answering said
unto him, Suffer it to be so now for thus it
becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he
suffered him. And Jesus, when he was baptized,
went up straightway out of the water.

9
What Weve Learned so Far
  • It was in the river of Jordan
  • Used water
  • Went up out of the water

Baptism
10
Matt 2819-20
  • Go ye therefore, and teach all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of
the Son, and of the Holy Ghost Teaching them to
observe all things whatsoever I have commanded
you and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the
    end of the world. Amen.

11
What Weve Learned so Far
  • It was in the river of Jordan
  • Used water
  • Went up out of the water
  • Universal to all nations

Baptism
  • Very Solemn-into Godhead

12
The Book of Mark
13
Mark 14-5
  • John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach
the baptism of repentance for the remission of
sins. And there went out unto him all the land
of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all
baptized of him in the river of Jordan,
    confessing their sins.

14
Mark 18-10
  • I indeed have baptized you with water but he
shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost. And it
came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from
Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in
Jordan. And straightway coming up out of the
    water

15
Mark 1615-16
  • Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel
to every creature. He that believeth and is
baptized shall be saved but he that believeth
    not shall be damned.

16
What Weve Learned so Far
  • It was in the river of Jordan
  • Used water
  • Went up out of the water

Were still not sure of what the act of baptism
  • Universal to all nations

Baptism
  • Very Solemn-into Godhead
  • Seems to take place down in the water
  • Faith Baptism Salvation

17
The Book of Luke
18
Luke 33
  • And he came into all the country about Jordan,
preaching the baptism of repentance for the
    remission of sins

Shows the importance of this act!
19
The Book of John
20
John 322-23
  • After these things came Jesus and his disciples
into the land of Judaea and there he tarried
with them, and baptized. And John also was
baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there
was much water there and they came, and were
    baptized.

21
How Much is Much?
  • Pitcher-full is much compared with a glass-full
  • Barrel-full is much compared with a pitcher-full
  • River is much compared with any of our vessels of
    water

22
The Book of Acts
23
Acts 238,41
  • Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be
baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus
Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall
receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
  • Then they that gladly received his word were
baptized and the same day there were added unto
    them about three thousand souls.

Shows the importance of this act! But no
indication to what baptism is!
24
Acts 812
  • But when they believed Philip preaching the
things concerning the kingdom of God, and the
name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both
    men and women.

Points to Matt 2819 Mark 1616 But no
indication to what baptism is!
25
Acts 836-39
  • And as they went on their way, they came unto a
certain water and the eunuch said, See, here is
water what doth hinder me to be baptized? And
Philip said, If thou believest with all thine
heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I
believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. And
he commanded the chariot to stand still and they
went down both into the water, both Philip and
the eunuch and he baptized him. And when they
were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the
Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him
no more and he went on his way rejoicing.

We learn that the baptizing occurs while they
were down in the water. After the baptizing was
done, they came up out of the water Like Jesus!
26
Much Water is now understood better
  • John baptized in the river Jordan and at Aenon
    where there was much water
  • Had to be enough for them to go down into like
    Philip and the eunuch

27
Other Cases of Baptism in Acts
  • Saul of Tarsus was baptized
  • (Acts 918) And immediately there fell from his
eyes as it had been scales and he received sight
forthwith, and arose, and was baptized.
  • (Acts 2216) And now why tarriest thou? arise,
and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling
on the name of the Lord.

28
Other Cases of Baptism in Acts
  • Cornelius (Acts 1047-48)
  • Lydia (Acts 1615)
  • Philippian jailor (Acts 1633)
  • These show that the Disciples were fulfilling the
Commission that Jesus gave them, but doesnt
    indicate what the act is...

29
Romans 63-4
  • Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized
into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into
death that like as Christ was raised up from the
dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also
should walk in newness of life.

30
Romans 63-4
  • Buried by Baptism
  • Water is the element to Baptism
  • One must go down into the water
  • One must come up out of the water
  • Must conclude that we are buried by water!
  • Therefore, the act of baptism is a burial in
    water!

31
This Burial must be a Temporary Burial?
  • (Col 212) Buried with him in baptism, wherein
also ye are risen with him through the faith of
the operation of God, who hath raised him from
    the dead.
  • Representation of Jesus burial and resurrection
    from the tomb

32
What have we learned?
  • The Scriptures defines baptism as an act in which
a man is buried in water and raised again in
imitation of the burial and resurrection of Jesus
    Christ.
  • The Scriptures show that this is done by the
    command of Jesus Christ.
  • The Scriptures show that the blessing of
remission of sins follows this act.

33
What have we learned?
  • The Scriptures show that salvation follows
    baptism.
  • The Scriptures show that the act brings us into
name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the
    Holy Spirit.
  • The Scriptures show that the gift of the Holy
Spirit follows our submission to the act of
    baptism

34
We Further Learn
  • Baptism is extremely important.
  • We seen this without introducing a single Greek
    word.
  • The Bible has shown our conclusions in all
    simplicity.

35
Have you submitted to this Act of Obedience?
  • (1 Peter 321) The like figure whereunto even
baptism doth also now save us (not the putting
away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of
a good conscience toward God,) by the
    resurrection of Jesus Christ.
