ARE WE PRODUCING DATA REALLY FUNCTIONAL TO A
MULTI-USERS COMMUNITY AND SYNERGIC TO THE USE OF
G.I.S?
HOW CONCRETE IS THE RISCK TO PRODUCE DATA WITH
SOFISTICATED TECHNOLOGIES BUT USING OLD
CONCEPTS DEVELOPED BEFORE THE AGEOF G.I.S.
and SPATIAL ANALYSIS?

  • ARE THE DATA ABLE TO REPRESENT THE INHERENT
  • CHARACTERISTIC OF THE STUDY AREA?
  • ARE THE DATA MULTI-USER ORIENTED?
  • (ADAPTABLE TO A WIDE RANGE OF END USERS?)
  • ARE THE DATA THEMATICALLY BALANCED?
  • ARE THE DATA FLEXIBLE ON A GEOGRAPHIC
  • AND THEMATIC EXTENT?
  • HOW EFFICIENT IS THE LEVEL OF INTEGRABILITY OF
  • THESE INFORMATION WITH OTHER TYPES OF DATA?
  • HOW EFFICIENT IS TODAY THE PRODUCTION OF DATA?

Methodology, approach and existing tools for
data production and
harmonization
  • LCCS was created in response to a need for
  • a harmonized and standardized collection of land
    cover data
  • availability of land cover data for a wide range
    of applications and users
  • comparison and correlation of land cover classes.

LCCS is a comprehensive methodology for
description, characterization, classification and
comparison of most of land cover identified
anywhere in the world, at any scale.
7
Methodology, approach and existing tools for
data production and
harmonization
  • Major advantages of the method
  • LCCS gives to the user the possibility to define
    a
  • large number of land cover features (app.100.000)
  • despite the large number all the classes have a
    very
  • distinctive and unambiguous meaning
  • LCCS create an absolute level of standardization
  • between the different users

8
Methodology, approach and existing tools for
data production and
harmonization
  • Major possible applications
  • all the land cover/natural resources mapping
  • activities at any scale in any part of the world
  • bridging system between land cover maps
  • that use local or not standardized legends
  • possible link between small scale global
  • mapping activities and detailed large scale
  • national mapping programs
  • bridging system to link natural resources
  • statistical census with mapping programs
  • at national or regional level

MAP (Mapping Accuracy Program) a statistical
program to allow the automatic calculation of
the thematic mapping accuracy using different
methods and different expected level of
statistical confidence.

ADG (Africover Database Gateway) it will be a
user friendly software that will allow an easy
and fast recombination of the Land Cover polygons
not only by class names but also, in a much more
flexible and detailed way, by classifiers.
