Title: Global Positioning Systems

1
Global Positioning Systems
  • And Their Non-Traditional Uses
  • BY Kevin Horrell
  • Randy Spillman
  • Rachel Miller
  • Jacqui Carter

2
What is GPS?
  • GPS can tell you exact position anywhere on the
    globe.
  • Latitude and Longitude
  • State plane coordinate
  • X, Y and Z axis
  • The principle behind GPS is the measurement of
distance (or range) between the satellites and
    the receiver

3
How Does It Work
4
Non-Traditional Uses
  • Auto Insurance Premiums
  • Balloon Tracking
  • Business Logistics
  • Farming
  • Geocaching
  • Lost Pets
  • 911 Assistance
  • Roadside Assistance

5
Auto Insurance
  • Autograph now TripSense
  • Launched in 1998 by Progressive Insurance
  • Based premiums on number of minutes customers
drive and tracks where and when they drive
  • Collects speed, miles driven, and destinations to
    cut insurance rates

6
  • Currently, Progressive provides all software
    needed in its free program
  • Specific discounts are taken after joining the
    discounted pilot program
  • Progressive currently seeks feedback

7
  • How does it work?
  • 1996 or newer model required
  • Plug TrisSensor device into diagnostic port near
    steering column of car
  • Records how fast, how much, miles driven
  • Can review discount based on this and miles
    driven on PC

8
Lost Pets RFID
  • Microchip implant has existed over 10 years.
  • Cost between 25 - 45.
  • Placed just beneath skin.
  • Contains information about the owner, animals
attack history, and animals medical history.
  • Information read with the use of a wand.

9
Lost Pets
  • Cities across the U.S. are requiring the implant
    for stray dogs.
  • Why People Are In Favor Of the Technology
  • Reduces the number of animals put to death each
    year.
  • Eventually will lead to public safety in
    controlling dogs.
  • Why People Are Against The Technology
  • Foreign technology that people arent used to
    yet.

10
Lost Pets GPS
  • Location easily found with the use of a cell
    phone.
  • Benefits of the technology
  • 2-5 day battery easily rechargeable.
  • Activity Sensors allows owners to know if the dog
    is in motion or still.
  • Downfalls of the technology
  • Cost ranging between 950 - 1050.
  • Being a collar -- it may easily fall off

11
GeoCaching
  • Started in Oregon in May of 2000
  • What is Geocaching
  • Treasure Hunt
  • What is in a Cache
  • What does it cost to play
  • What to do when you find it

12
United States Caches
13
Missouri
14
Different Methods
  • Offset Caches - They're not found by simply going
to some coordinates and finding a cache there.
  • Multi-caches - The first cache gives coordinates
(or partial coordinates) to the next location, or
multiple caches have hints to the final cache.
  • Virtual caches - A cache is actually an existing
landmark, such as a tombstone or statue. You have
to answer a question from the landmark and let
the "cache" owner know as proof that you were
    there.

15
GPS for the Blind
  • Uses GPS to locate where the user is
  • Helps the blind navigate by giving oral
    directions
