Adinkra Symbols.
Adinkra symbols are small, symbolic pictures used
to decorate colourful patterned cloth in Ghana.
7
These symbols are seen all over Ghana and not
just on cloth....
8
The symbols are full of meaning. The colour of
the cloth is also very important....
  • This symbol is called Gye nyame. It is the most
commonly used symbol in Ghana. It is found on
bank notes, jewellery and furniture. It is used
by Muslim and Christian printers to show that God
    is everywhere.

Handcuffs
For many years men, women and children were taken
away from Ghana as slaves. They were handcuffed
and this symbol reminds us that slavery is always
wrong.
Anansi the spider is in many folk tales. He is a
clever trickster and is a symbol of wisdom.
Two crocodiles
Ferns can grow in very dry weather and poor soil.
They represent working through problems.
This symbol reminds us to work for the good of
everyone, and not to be selfish.
Teeth and tongue
The teeth and tongue work together and are both
important. They represent people and countries
depending on each other.
In Ghana only rich people can afford to buy
Mercedes cars. So this symbol represents ambition
and hopes for a secure future.
Linked hearts
Crocodile
This symbol reminds us to try to understand each
other and to settle arguments.
The crocodile lives both in water and on the
land. It represents adaptability.
Moon and star
Padlock
Laws and rules apply to everyone. This symbol
represents justice and fairness for all.
This symbolises co-operation between people.
Bunch of cola nuts
Seeds of the fofoo plant
Cola nuts are grown and eaten in Ghana. They may
be offered to welcome visitors. They represent
hospitality.
The fofoo plant is greedy and jealous of its
neighbours. This symbol teaches us to be happy
with what we have.
14
What have we learnt about Ghana from studying
Adinkra patterns?
15
The symbols are printed onto fabric using
printing blocks...
16
The printing blocks are made from the gourds that
grow on calabash plants.....
