  • Presented by Lance Gooberman, M.D., J.D.

The Draeger Interlock Device
  • Made by National Draeger, manufacturer of the
    Breathalyzer and the Alcotest 7110
  • The only evidentiary breath testing instruments
approved by the New Jersey Supreme Court for use
by the NJ State and Local Police

3
The Draeger Interlock Device - Overview
  • Breath alcohol analysis device that is installed
    in a motor vehicle
  • Prevents an alcohol-impaired person from starting
    the vehicle
  • Vehicle starts after a person blows a breath
    sample without alcohol present
  • Retests are randomly required during vehicle
    operation
  • System records dates, times, test results, engine
    runs, and engine offs
  • Data provided to authorities and used to
    determine compliance with the program

4
The Draeger Interlock DeviceHow does it work?
  • Measures and records Breath Alcohol Concentration
    (BAC) level before vehicle starts
  • If BAC is below the set limit, vehicle starts
  • If BAC is above limit, vehicle will not start
  • Requires driver to blow other tests during course
    of driving
  • Records all BAC readings, starts, shut-offs,
violations, dates and times of events
  • Events are uploaded at service center for
    monitoring purposes
  • Interlock indicates when service is due
  • Vehicle will not start if not serviced as required

5
The Draeger Interlock DeviceThe Breath Test
  • Clients are trained on how to blow into the
    device.
  • The interlock will display PASSED or FAILED.
  • If PASSED, the next message is OK START.
  • Vehicle must be started within two minutes after
    a breath test.
  • If FAILED, the vehicle will not start and
DISABLED appears for the number of minutes set
in the program. If BAC is high, device is
    disabled longer.

The Draeger Interlock DeviceLOCKOUT
  • Repeated failed tests result in LOCKOUT
    message.
  • Display shows how long the LOCKOUT period is.
  • During the countdown, DISABLED and the

Questions
  • Will the unit shut off the engine? No.
  • What if vehicle stalls in traffic? Device allows
a grace period of two minutes.
  • Will the Interlock record a false positive
test? No. Electrochemical fuel cell technology is
    used which is alcohol specific.

specific and must be presented in a unique
manner. Incorrect breath presentation is noted in

  • How often is the Interlock monitored? In New
Jersey, it is monitored at the service center
every 65 days. The monitoring and calibration
    check takes about 15 minutes.
