- Made by National Draeger, manufacturer of the
Breathalyzer and the Alcotest 7110 - The only evidentiary breath testing instruments
approved by the New Jersey Supreme Court for use
by the NJ State and Local Police
3The Draeger Interlock Device - Overview
- Breath alcohol analysis device that is installed
in a motor vehicle - Prevents an alcohol-impaired person from starting
the vehicle - Vehicle starts after a person blows a breath
sample without alcohol present - Retests are randomly required during vehicle
operation - System records dates, times, test results, engine
runs, and engine offs - Data provided to authorities and used to
determine compliance with the program
4The Draeger Interlock DeviceHow does it work?
- Measures and records Breath Alcohol Concentration
(BAC) level before vehicle starts - If BAC is below the set limit, vehicle starts
- If BAC is above limit, vehicle will not start
- Requires driver to blow other tests during course
of driving - Records all BAC readings, starts, shut-offs,
violations, dates and times of events - Events are uploaded at service center for
monitoring purposes - Interlock indicates when service is due
- Vehicle will not start if not serviced as required
5The Draeger Interlock DeviceThe Breath Test
- Clients are trained on how to blow into the
device. - The interlock will display PASSED or FAILED.
- If PASSED, the next message is OK START.
- Vehicle must be started within two minutes after
a breath test. - If FAILED, the vehicle will not start and
DISABLED appears for the number of minutes set
in the program. If BAC is high, device is
disabled longer.

- Repeated failed tests result in LOCKOUT
message. - Display shows how long the LOCKOUT period is.
- During the countdown, DISABLED and the
remaining time will be displayed. - After LOCKOUT period is over, another breath test
can be taken.

Breath Test (incorrect sample) ? Disabled for
15 minutes

8The Draeger Interlock DeviceRolling Retest
- Interlock program requires additional tests
during journeys, given at random intervals (first
5-15 min, then 20-45 min). - Device prompts RE-TEST REQUIREDand PLEASE
BLOW. - Retest to be taken within 5 minutes .
- After PASSED displayed, trip may continue.
- Retests should be done in a safe area.
- If Retest not taken in time or properly, vehicle
horn will honk. - Pull over and shut engine off ? Disabled for 15
minutes to three hours.

- Device displays a countdown for service date and
time. - Display starts one week in advance of service
date. - Five day grace period
- Required every 65 days

- Collects the data stored in the device

- Checks for evidence of tampering
- Checks wiring connections
- Calibrates the Interlock
- Collects payment
- Schedules next appointment

- If device detects THREE violations, it is
programmed to require earlier monitoring. - Display indicates Lockout in XX days
- Five day countdown

Questions
- Will the unit shut off the engine? No.
- What if vehicle stalls in traffic? Device allows
a grace period of two minutes. - Will the Interlock record a false positive
test? No. Electrochemical fuel cell technology is
used which is alcohol specific. - Can someone besides the driver provide the breath
test? Yes, however, the breath sample is volume
specific and must be presented in a unique
manner. Incorrect breath presentation is noted in
the events log. - How often is the Interlock monitored? In New
Jersey, it is monitored at the service center
every 65 days. The monitoring and calibration
check takes about 15 minutes.

from Missed Service
- Lockout occurs if device is not serviced when
required. - Client must schedule a service call at cars
location or - Have vehicle towed to the Interlock Device of New
Jersey shop. - This is at the expense of the client.
