2History of the project
- Design first started in 1970s
- General desing phase in 1997-1999
- Evaluation of generald design phase in 2000-2001
- Detailed design phase 2002-2004
- Building started 2004
- In every phase, safety issues have been discussed
in a group with participants from all the
important groups - Rail Administration
- Operator
- Rescue services
- Environmental authorities
- Consultants HVAC-designers

Basic information for safety design
- Length 13,5 km
- Single track and electrified (125 kV) line with
automatic train protection systems - Only freight traffic, Sn 80 km/h, track
geometry designed for 100 km/h - Trains/day at start of operation 5 5 (max. 10
10) - No tank wagons allowed in the tunnel, dangerous
goods in tank containers - No regular traffic with diesel engines (only for
maintenance work) - Only one train in tunnel at a time
- Only one driver in train
19 km
6Typical cross section
- Tunnel structures
- Drill and blast rock tunnel with
- Steel fibre reinforced shotcrete
- Rock bolting
- Lining structure
- 80 mm PE-foam sheets
- Wire mesh reinforced shotcrete

8Savio tunnel safety principles
- The Savio tunnel will be equipped with such
technical systems that there will be reasonable
conditions for securing the lives and properties
in tunnel as well as to facilitate safe working
conditions for rescue services. - Train drivers, maintenance crews and rescue
service personnel are trained for working in
tunnel - The tunnel will be equipped with escape routes
out of the tunnel and access routes for the
rescue services - The maximum length of single escape route is 2
km, so it is required to have extra systems for
securing the safety of train driver - i.e. all locomotives are equipped with breathing
apparatus for the driver.
9Savio tunnel safety systems
- There will be water supply for fire fighting and
continuous communication system for whole length
of the tunnel. - Tunnel will be equipped with fire posts (1 pc /
100 m of tunnel). Fire water feed connection are
in tunnel portals and in portals of access
tunnels and shafts. - There will be continuous fire detection system in
the tunnel and fire detectors in all technical
rooms. All technical rooms and acess point areas
outside the tunnel are separated as their own
fire protected sections - Emergency phones and fire alarm buttons will be
installed at 300 m intervals through the tunnel.
10Savio tunnel safety systems
- Tunnels will be equipped with antenna systems
that will make it possible for communication
systems to work in tunnel i.e. rescue service
radio system, GSM-R and railway maintenance
communication systems - All access points to the tunnel will be equipped
with CCTV-system and access control systems. - All control systems are monitored from the tunnel
operation center with a centralized control
system. All information is also available in the
railway traffic management centre. - The tunnel will be equipped with special
emergency earthing systems in all access points.
11Savio tunnel safety systems
- The tunnel will be equipped with smoke extraction
systems for all tunnel sections. - In fire situation the smoke from the tunnel is
extracted with special smoke extraction fans
through tunnel portals and four access shafts. - With the smoke extraction fans it is possible to
produce at least 2 m/s air speed and the air in
the tunnel section will change at least three
times/hour. - The tunnel is equipped with smoke screens that
will make it possible to separate tunnel to 5
different sections smoke extraction sections.
