Loose Objects in the Vehicle Cabin Can
Kill Background A recent road traffic accident
once again highlights the need to remind drivers
to keep all loose articles out of the vehicle
cabin. A recent roll-over accident occurred when
the drivers attention was diverted from
controlling the vehicle by objects on the front
seat. He subsequently suffered a head injury from
one of the loose objects during the
roll-over. Recommendations Drivers are strongly
advised to keep the vehicle cabin free from all
loose objects. Coolers, toolboxes and safety
equipment should be stored in the tool
compartment of the vehicle. Vehicles without tool
compartments should have any loose objects
secured. If loose items cannot be safely secured,
they should not be carried in the
vehicle. Drivers should also stop for any other
activity which prevents them from giving their
full attention to driving, e.g. checking
directions or picking up a dropped cassette.
Eating, drinking or talking on the telephone will
divert the drivers attention and are strongly
discouraged. Drivers wishing to take a drink
should stop and take a short break to allow them
to do this safely. Learning Points A toolbox or
a cooler can become a deadly projectile should a
roll-over occur. Smaller loose objects may look
harmless but are often the underlying reason for
road traffic accidents due to the driver being
distracted when handling them. Drivers need to
pay full attention to driving at all times.
