• Was Highly influenced by Emersons little book
  Nature
• Despite being Harvard educated he found himself
  as a surveyor and a pencil maker for a short time

• At the age of 28 went to Walden Pond and built a
  cabin on the land of Emerson
• Spent 2 years there
• The experience was seen as an experiment in
  living
• He wrote a book based on his time at Walden and
  spent the next 9 years trying to sell it

• Thoreau was also an abolitionist and was against
  slavery
• Died at the age of 44 of TB
• Was seen as a hermit and prophet of passive
  resistance seen as an influence on Gandhi and
  Martin Luther King Jr.
