Title: Is your drinking water good enough

1
Is your drinking water good enough?
  • What can you do about it?
  • Find out.

2
What is Reverse Osmosis? In order to understand
Reverse Osmosis, we need to know..
  • What is Osmosis?
  • The natural tendency of a solvent liquid, such as
water, to pass through a semi-permeable membrane,
that allows the passage of the solvent but not
the dissolved solids, from the side of the
weaker concentration to the more concentrated
side . Without added pressure, a solution divided
in such manner will undergo Osmosis, in order to
equalize the concentration of the two sides.
  • In Reverse Osmosis, by means of applying pressure
on the side with the heavier concentration of
dissolved solids, the tendency to equalize the
concentration of solids is reversed, hence the
    name Reverse Osmosis or RO.
  • By applying pressure, the water with higher
concentration of dissolved solids is forced to
pass through the semi-permeable membrane, or
simply membrane, that prevents the vast majority
of solids to pass through, delivering water of
dramatically reduced Total Dissolved Solids or
TDS and as a result, of the highest purity.
  • Some of the TDS found in water are fluoride,
    arsenic, lead, chlorine, pesticides,
petrochemicals, hormones, cysts viruses just to
    mention a few.
  • No other method is as effective in removal of
TDS as the RO method and for that reason it is
used in all large scale water purification
plants. In the case of the large scale plants,
the membrane density is designed to deliver the
acceptable level of TDS, as if the membrane grade
was overly tight, the delivery rate would not be
sufficient to keep with demand, therefore the
average TDS reading in municipal varies according
to location and source of water.

3
Municipal water
  • Whilst municipal water treatment plants do clean
the water to acceptable levels, that in itself is
not always a guarantee it will arrive at the
point of use (tap) in the same quality. Many
factors in the water distribution system, such as
rusty pipes etc. contribute to adversely
    effecting its quality.
  • News Update According to a recent news release
at an American Water Works Ass'n workshop, EPA
field engineers reported that although the water
leaving a municipal treatment plant may comply
with all US EPA criteria, events occurring in the
water distribution system after water leaves the
plant can lead to significant spikes in
    contaminant levels.
  • Case histories were reported in which
deterioration of pipe walls have caused drinking
water levels exceeding tens and thousands of
milligrams per liter for iron and copper and
exceeding hundreds of micrograms per liter as
well for arsenic, lead, zinc and manganese well
above levels considered safe for consumption, the
release stated. Dated February 11, 2004, Water
    Tech Online news.
  • All the more reason to protect yourself with a
    quality water purifier.

What lurks in drinking water?
  • The natural filtration systems that water used to
go through in the past are now becoming polluted
and water is being increasingly effected as a
result. Among the dissolved solids can be found
    many chemicals, prescription drugs, naturally
occurring solutions, poisons cysts viruses such
    as
  • Anti-biotics anti-depressants effecting the
    immune and nervous systems.
  • Fluoride responsible for dental fluorosis,
    crippling skeletal fluorosis, immune system
deficiency, negative effects in bone, tendon,
muscle, skin, cartilage, lungs, kidney and
trachea. .There is a large natural fluoride belt
starting from Western Turkey, going through
    Iran-Iraq-Afghanistan-India-Thailand and
    finishing in China
  • Arsenic effecting skin circulatory system,
    risk of cancer.
  • Lead delays physical/mental development, suspect
    for ADT
  • Chlorine contains thrihalomethanes causing
liver, kidney or nervous system problems and
    increased risk of cancer
  • Pesticides accused for causing immune
deficiency, cancer and speeding the ageing
    process.
  • Petrochemicals responsible for a variety of
    immune system effects.
  • Cysts and viruses (depending on the water source
and location) just to mention a few.
  • Hormones leaching in the waterways from sewerage
    treatment plants.
  • To grasp the reality of contaminants in drinking
water , their source and side effects, one HAS to

5
The solution?
  • A quality water purifier will ensure adequate
protection from the nasty pollutants and provide
you and your family with safe drinking water.
  • Having any purifier does is not a guarantee of
quality. One has to engage in some research to
successfully choose the right purifier for their
    needs and situation.
  • The choice will depend on your needs,
expectations as well as water source quality.
  • Twin and triple purifiers with Polypropylene (PP)
and Carbon block cartridges remove chlorine,
odour, some organic chemicals but DO NOT remove
    TDS.
  • Reverse Osmosis or RO purifiers are equipped with
the PP and carbon block cartridges and have a
membrane filter to successfully remove up to 98
    of TDS.
  • If your water source is a well or tank, where the
water has not undergone sterilization treatment
then a RO purifier equipped with UV sterilizer is
a MUST. The UV sterilizer will successfully
destroy any cysts and viruses that may be present
    in the water.
  • When using Reverse Osmosis, a mineral cartridge
installed just before the faucet (tap) is
recommended to replenish the essential minerals
that were filtered by the membrane along with the
    nasty TDS.

6
Choosing a purifier
  • When it comes to choosing a purifier it is an
arduous chore. There are enough varieties,
models, and systems to confuse even the most
    devoted researcher.
  • The criteria the purifier should be judged upon
    are
  • a) quality first and foremost the purifier MUST
deliver quality water or it has failed its
fundamental role. No looks, low cost,
convenience, or any other reason should be
considered. After all it is of benefit to your
    health.
  • b) construction the material its made of, will
determine and effect the quality of your water
and ultimately your health. Choose a natural
material like food grade stainless steel that
will not adversely effect your water. Plastics
and rubber have no place in something your body
absorbs on a daily basis. Purifiers made of
plastic rubber will eventually need to be
replaced due to the breakdown of the materials
    and become landfill.
  • c) capacity the purifier should be able to cope
with the demands and serve your needs. A good
flow rate is an important feature of a good
purifier. Most ROs are burdened with a inadequate
flow rate as a result of the rubber in the tank.
  • d) Function a reliable purifier that will not
    breakdown leaks due to rubber/plastic
degrading, or rust in the tank shell. RO tanks
with rubber, even food grade rubber, should be
avoided as they at the very least adversely
effect the taste and odour in your water making
it un-palatable. Often a non food grade rubber
(black colour) is used with undesirable effects
in water. This is the reason a carbon block
cartridge is installed post-tank in an attempt to
control odour and taste. With time the rubber
brakes down and the rubber particles contaminate
the cartridge rendering it useless and adding to
    the cost of replacing consumables.
  • E) Economics a cheap purifier is NOT always the
most economic. A long lasting purifier is the
most economic. Being the most important item in
your household it should be chosen wisely and
    with your health in mind.
  • F) Warranty is vital. If the manufacturer offers
a long warranty, it is evident they have faith in
the quality of their product and its worth
    considering.

7
Downside of plastics
  • When you eat or drink things that are stored in
plastic, taste it, smell it, wear it, sit on it,
and so on, plastic is incorporated into you. In
fact, the plastic gets into the food and food
gets into the plastic and you
  • According to Dr. George Pauli, Associate Director
of Science Policy, FDA Office of Food Additive
Safety, the regulations mandated in 1958 assume
that all plastics migrate toxins into the food
they contact. Migration is the movement of free
toxins from plastic into the substances they
contact in this case its your food.
  • How is it made?
  • In a nutshell, plastic is made by combining
monomers into polymers under great heat and
pressure in a process called polymerization. Each
manufacturer has its own proprietary formula for
each plastic. And each uses a variety of
additives such as plasticizers for flexibility,
UV filters for protection from sunlight,
    antistatic agents, flame-retardants, colorants,
antioxidants, and more. Heavy metals such as
cadmium, mercury, and lead are common additives.
There are also chemicals used to facilitate
production such as mold releases, and countless
other toxic chemicals regularly added to plastic
consumer goods without our knowledge or approval.
  • The unsolicited financial burden on society
manifests itself as increased taxes to finance
municipal curb side recycling programs, landfill
space, and incineration. It also increases health
care and insurance costs as a result of its
incineration polluting the air, water, and food.
  • Water Stored in Plastic
  • Water bottles are made from various types of
    plastic   polycarbonate (PC), polyethylene ter
    phthalate (PET), Polypropylene (PP), high-density
    polyethylene (HDPE), low-density polyethylene
(LDPE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC or vinyl), and
others To reiterate, they all migrate to some
    degree.
  • Bisphenol-A (BPA) is a monomer used in the
synthesis of PC plastics, epoxy resins, and
composites, as well as a heat stabilizer in PVC.
The list of products containing BPA is long. Some
rigid containers such as water and baby bottles
are made of PC. The popular Nalgene water
bottles are made of Lexan brand PC.
  • .In the year 2000, Consumers Union (CU) tested
water from five-gallon PC plastic bottles for
BPA, They found from 0.5 ppb to 11 ppb in water
samples from eight of the ten 5-gallon jugs.
  • As consumers, we always look for ways to maintain
the status quo of our modern lives. However, the
only logic I can see in the regulation of food
contact plastics is profit at the expense of our
health, the economy, society, and environment.
You neednt be a polymer scientist to know that
plastic shouldnt contact food. What is essential
though is a firm standing in reality and a good
    grip on logic.
  • Make your point by choosing the natural, not the
    nasty alternative

Introducing .
  • A new era of
  • unparalleled RO
  • technology.

Patent pending
9
Waterstream or no Waterstreamthats a question
  • Many spend a small fortune on RO purifiers for
their tropical goldfish without raising an
    eyelid.
  • Some spend more beautifying their car than
providing clean water for them and their family.
  • A set of good golf clubs can buy 3-4 quality
    water purifiers.
  • Yet, when it comes to providing the most vital
element to our wellbeing, clean water, they
engage in some serious penny pinching.
  • The following is for those who think
    WaterStream is uneconomical

10
WaterStream RO Vs other ROs
  • Food grade 304 stainless steel construction
guarantees water purity and will outlast its
    plastic competitors.
  • A 5 or 6 stage system with twin sintered carbon
block cartridges and RO membrane for totally pure
    water.
  • Removes sand, dirt, rust, silt, sludge, rust
scale, chlorine, odour, organic chemicals, TDS,
and cysts viruses (with the UV sterilizer
    capability).
  • Food grade silicon triple o-Ring cartridge
    fittings prevent leaking cross-contamination.
  • Alkaline mineral cartridge (optional) replenishes
essential minerals and alkalizes the water.
  • No plastic chambers to interfere with the water
    purity.
  • Lasts FOREVER
  • Plastic construction, prone to plastic breakdown
  • 5-6 stage systems
  • Remove sand, dirt, rust, silt, sludge, rust
scale, chlorine, odour, organic chemicals, TDS,
    and cysts
  • Single butyl rubber ring
  • PP cartridge no rubber ring
  • Plastic chambers interfere with water purity
  • butyl rubber bladder/diaphragm storage tank
  • Prone to leaking
  • Prone to plastics breakdown
  • Lasts forever? NO!

11
WaterStream RO tank Vs bladder/diaphragm tanks
  • Food grade 304 stainless steel construction.
  • No rubber bladder/diaphragm
  • No rubber taste/smell
  • No slime/microbial growth
  • No leaks
  • No plastic
  • No rust
  • No internal welding
  • No membrane fouling
  • Fantastic flow rate (3.5lt /min)

  • Access plug for cleaning
  • 10 YEAR REPLACEMENT WARRANTY.
  • Life expectancy WATERSTREAM IS FOREVER.
  • Butyl rubber (inside)
  • Carbon steel-plastic (outside)
  • Rubber taste smell
  • Slime/ microbial growth
  • Rust/plastic breakdown
  • Leaking due to rubber
  • Membrane fouling
  • Poor flow rate
  • Throw away item (landfill)
  • Life expectancy 4-5 years
  • Post tank cartridge fouling due to rubber
    particles
  • Multiple tanks capability
  • guarantee????
  • Life expectancy? 3-4 years

12
WaterStream Vs bottled watereach set of filters
cleans 8000lt of waterwhich equals 400 x
20ltbottles. Now you can use clean water for
more than just drinking.
  • More economical
  • Better quality water
  • No heavy bottles to carry
  • Convenient
  • Fresh, uninterrupted water at your fingertips
  • No waiting for deliveries
  • No water stored in plastic
  • Drinking, cooking, tea, coffee, shakes, now will
all taste so much better with purified water
  • More expensive
  • Questionable quality
  • Heavy loads to carry
  • Inconvenient
  • Stored for ages
  • Waiting for deliveries
  • Stored in plastic
  • Some water bottles were found to have been filled
    straight from the tap.

13
This is why bladder/diaphragm tanks fail
  • RUBBER the common denominator in all RO tanks
    (except the WaterStream RO tank).
  • The cause of leaks, rust (due to moisture/leaks),
    poor pressure/flow rate, rubber taste/smell,
    breakdowns, post tank cartridge contamination,
    slime/microbial growth,
  • Rubber bladder dissected, taken from steel shell
tank that had rusted due to leaking bladder.

14
is more
economical
as
  • The minute you purchase your second purifier or
tank (and you will have to, if its not a
    WaterStream) .
  • .you have paid too much
    for an inferior product !

15
because ..
  • Is
  • forever!

  • your water is our life
