1
Tele-MonA telecommunication monitoring device
  • Presented by Group 3
  • Jon Gardiol Team Leader
  • Adam Vance Project Manager
  • Dennis Mallory Hardware Lead
  • Dan Klein Software Lead

2
Overview of Tele-Mon
  • Problem
  • Parents do not currently have the capability to
    adequately monitor their households telephone
    use
  • Solution
  • An in-line device that monitors incoming and
outgoing telephone calls with the added ability
to record conversations directly from the phone
    line

3
Legality
  • Voice recording
  • Depending upon the state of residence, only one
of the parties involved in the phone call must be
    notified of call recording

4
Marketability
  • Is there a market for this device?
  • Parents need the ability to monitor their
    childrens phone use
  • 14 of the US population is made up of
individuals between 10 and 19 years of age
  • Verify phone usage against telephone provider
  • Who will buy this product?
  • Accessible to all income levels

5
Three Conceptual Designs
  • Design 1
  • Moderately difficult in both hardware and
    software design
  • Design 2
  • A hardware intensive design with less emphasis on
    software
  • Design 3
  • A heavy software design with moderate hardware
    design

6
Design 1
  • In-Line Device
  • Log Caller ID data as well as tone dialed numbers
  • Analog voice signal extracted from the line
  • Computer Software
  • Controlling capabilities
  • Permanent storage of information and
    conversations
  • Automatic email notification and/or voice
    recording
  • RF Communication
  • Separate analog and digital RF links

7
Design 2
  • Design 1 with the following changes
  • In-Line Device
  • Voice signal stored digitally within the device
  • Computer Software
  • Recording of analog signal via the sound card is
    eliminated
  • RF Communication
  • Analog link eliminated

8
Design 3
  • Design 1 with the following changes
  • In-Line Device
  • Same as design 1
  • Computer Software
  • Remote client service over internet
  • Secure IP link
  • Eliminate email notification
  • RF Communications
  • Same as design 1

9
What are we going to implement?
  • Well take whats behind design 1!
  • Reasons
  • Uses both hardware and software equally
  • More cost-effective to develop than other designs
  • More efficient solution to the problem
  • Most realistic to be fully developed within given
    time frame

Design 1 System Diagram
11
Hardware
  • Microcontrollers
  • Non-volatile Memory
  • Phone Circuitry
  • Caller ID decoder
  • Tone-dialed number detector
  • On/Off Hook detector
  • Ring Detector
  • LCD display

12
Communications
  • Digital Link
  • Serial RF Transceivers for bi-directional
communication between the in-line device and the
    host computer
  • Analog Link
  • An FM transmitter to send the voice signal
    extracted from the phone line
  • An FM receiver to bring the voice signal into the
host computers sound card to be recorded

13
Software
  • Standard Windows style of user interface
  • Active control of Tele-Mon via wireless RS-232
  • Automatic data retrieval when connected
  • WAV recording of conversations through sound card
    input and optional MP3 conversion
  • Permanent storage place for phone usage
    information and recorded conversations

14
Testing Methodology
  • Wireless serial communication link will be
verified by sending data across the link and
checking that it is properly received
  • Analog audio link will be tested by supplying the
transmitter with a sample audio signal and
listening to the signal on the receiving side
  • Overall device functionality will be tested by
using it to record phone information and
    conversations under normal conditions
