What do we mean by student apprenticeship?
  • Students choose a vocational pathway.
  • They have the opportunity to complement the
    GCSE route by either taking either work based
    qualification or an Applied GCSE. Choice of
    qualification to match the students needs.
  • Additional courses or projects running
    alongside their option such as business
    mentoring, ASDAN youth award, experience of work
    which which may contribute to an employability
    award.

What the model intends to do
  • Complement and enhance the existing curriculum
    not replace.
  • Have a mixture of learning programmes so that
    students are able to combine a wide range of
    subjects and skills that meet their interests and
    aspirations.
  • Give an experience of work that can be delivered
    with the aid of employers or local training
    provider.

What the model intends to do
  • Have vocational routes available for all students
    across the ability range with clear progression
    routes.
  • Students may follow part or all of the model a
    range of possibilities.

Aims of the LID project
  • Bridge the gap for students who would otherwise
    not access level 3 qualifications.
  • Expand the student apprenticeship to other
    schools in North Hertfordshire.
  • Include a route for Modern Apprenticeship at 16
    and avoid drop out.
  • Provide enhanced and impartial guidance.

  • Provide opportunities for experience of work.
  • Promote the WRL curriculum and its relationship
    to learning.

Why is it needed?
  • The apprenticeship will enable students to make
    an informed choice of progression by
  • Supporting students to manage their learning and
    training.
  • Building students confidence and capability for
    success in the adult and working life.
  • Give students the opportunity to continue
    progression post 16 whether it is Modern
    Apprenticeship, further or higher education.

Objectives
  • To provide students aged 14-19 with a broad base
    of vocational knowledge and understanding.
  • To involve employers in supporting the learning
    of students.
  • Student apprenticeship as a transition route.
  • To support collaboration between schools,
    training providers, local colleges and employers.

How are we going to make it happen?
  • Curriculum time in schools/college/training
    provider with a common timetable. Collaborative
    working.
  • Work towards a clear vocational pathway that all
    schools can work with.
  • Each school have a named co-ordinator to work
    with key partners.
  • Flexibility in qualifications.

  • Business links established. Develop closer
    working relationships between education and the
    local business community.
  • Training provider to set up a suitable programme
    for an experience of work and enterprise.
  • Establish work placements for students.
  • Integrate key/ICT/CEG skills into the model.
