  • The Darden Entrepreneurs Venture Capital Club
    seeks to develop the entrepreneurial and venture
    capital passion and capability of Darden students
    and alumni, and to present them with
    opportunities to realize their goals of investing
    in, owning and/or starting businesses through
    further education, networking and support.

Competition Overview
  • Purpose
  • The primary purpose of the UVA Business Plan
    Competition is to encourage the development of
    new business ventures by members of the UVA
    community.
  • Who May Enter
  • Any team with a UVA graduate, undergraduate,
    doctoral student, post-doctoral student, faculty
    or staff member on the team may enter the
    competition.
  • Submission Requirements
  • The Business Plan Competition requires submission
    of a complete business plan. This plan should
    include
  • An executive summary
  • A clear description of the product or service
    being offered
  • A discussion of the market for this product or
    service
  • An outline of the business model
  • An overview of the management team
  • Projected financials
  • Participants should be able to speak to the sales
    cycle, price point, product distribution,
    competitive advantages, and barriers to entry.

Timeline
  • Monday, January 23, 2006 (by 430 pm)
  • Submit ELECTRONIC VERSION (evcofficers_at_darden.vir
    ginia.edu)
  • And 8 bound copies of your Business Plan and
    Executive Summary to Gayle Noble, Batten
    Institute, Faculty Office Building 113. The
    plans will be pre-screened by a panel of faculty
    members.
  • Tuesday, January 31, 2006 (by 500 pm)
  • Announcement of up to 8 semi-finalists selected
    by panel of venture capitalists and experts.
    These plans will then be submitted to final round
    judges.
  • Tuesday, February 14, 2006 (by 500 pm)
  • Announcement of up to 4 finalists. Selected by
    same panel of venture capitalists and judges.
  • Wednesday, February 22, 2006 600 pm, The
    Darden School
  • Presentation of finalist business plans to judges
    and Darden community.  Each team will be allotted
    a total of 30 minutes 15 minutes for their
    presentation and 15 minutes for questions from
    the panel.

Darden Progressive Incubator
  • Admission into the incubator for up to 2 years
    the second year is not guaranteed, but allowed if
    the venture meets certain milestones
  • Stipend for expenses of 2,750 in the first year
    and 1,000 in the second year
  • Advisory Board created to support the venture
    during its time in the Incubator
  • Darden interns for the summer paid by the
    incubator
  • Office space in incubator for the year and
    dedicated LT room for the summer
  • Access to printers, copiers, fax machines and
    other office supplies
  • Access to Batten Institute and Charlottesville
    Venture Group activities

Business Plan Tips
  • Executive Summary (4 Cs)
  • It is the most critical element of your plan
  • It must be concise (1-3 pages)
  • Needs to convey the essential elements of your
    business
  • Must convince the reader to turn the page
  • Market
  • Have you done your research?
  • Have you segmented your market and defined your
    target customers?
  • Be realistic, if you don't have competitorsyou
    probably don't have a market.
  • Value Proposition
  • How is your business distinct? How will you
    differentiate yourself?
  • What value does your product or service provide?
  • How will you attract potential investors,
    employees, and partners?
  • Revenue ModelCash is King!
  • How will you generate revenue?
  • How realistic are your financial projections?
