Title: Fidel

1
Fidel
Fidel is a post-16 learner who had to work very
hard to get the grades he needed to get on the
Advanced Diploma in society, health
development. His determination and enthusiasm got
him through and he has settled down well onto his
new course, enjoying the variety the ASL brings
to his study. Outside of college Fidel puts all
his energies into the inner city community centre
where he goes most evenings, and has done since
the age of 11. He has started to help out with
some of the activities there and the staff think
he has all the attributes required to work with
young people in the future. He especially enjoys
the sessions when the centre organise outdoor
adventure weekends in the great outdoors!

Extended Project
Work experience
The project element of the Diploma gave Fidel the
opportunity to look at ways in which the
community centre could work more effectively with
potential partners in the area. He arranged for
various organisations to give talks at the
centre, including Connexions, a drug and alcohol
advice group and the community safety
officer. Fidel then submitted a funding
application to the Community Safety Partnership
to support an outdoor adventure week to the Lake
District. The application was successful and
Fidel took a central role in organising
transport, equipment and helped lead many of the
activities undertaken during the week.
It was a great success many of the young people
saying it was the best week they had ever had!
This point also emerged from the evaluation
Fidel conducted after the week, which indicated
enhanced levels of social interaction and a
significant improvement in their problem solving
abilities.
Fidel spent his work experience with a Youth
Offending Team, which was a real eye-opener. He
worked with outreach officers in areas of the
city suffering from high levels of anti social
behaviour and had the confidence to engage with
individuals who were displaying varying levels of
challenging behaviour. He helped prepare a risk
assessment for future work placements and
contributed to the induction manual being
produced for new recruits to the team, especially
the section on effective partnership working.
Progression route Fidels experience during his
placement convinced him that he wanted to work in
a community engagement role. The Advanced
Apprenticeship in Community Justice was a logical
step and one he seized with both hands
AND... principal learning functional skills
