2What is Banner?
- A consolidated Information System designed
specifically for higher education - A system which was purchased by Utah System of
Higher Education for state-wide implementation - Also being used by other research institutes of
varying sizes - An Oracle engine and software reside on Linux
servers operated by USU NCS - Accessed through a web browser
- USUs system of record for all business
transactions.

- USU is bound by law to follow these guidelines.
- Non-directory student information is confidential
and must be protected. FERPA prohibits
disclosing student information to spouses or
parents. - Student information with a privacy flag may not
be divulged in any form.
6Accessing USU Banner
- Download Java Runtime on your machine
- Banner website banner.usu.edu
- Note no www!
- Username firstname_lastname
- Initial password A (SSN)
- You will be prompted immediately to change your
password on you initial entry to Banner.

System Menus
10There are several ways to access a form
- MAIN MENU Expand the main menu
- DIRECT ACCESS Type the name of the form in the
Direct Access box (GO TO) and press enter. - MY BANNER select a form in your custom menu
- SEARCH Use the drop down box next to the direct
access box to search for a form. - OPTIONS MENU Find forms related to a specific
item in the Options on the Menu Bar - QUICK FLOW Use a Quick flow to link forms
- LAST 10 FORMS The last 10 forms you have used
are saved at the bottom of the File menu.
11One way to access a form is to find it in the
main menu

- Click on folders to expand or
- collapse a menu.
- Click on form name to go to
- to the form.
12Another way to access a form is to type the name
in the Direct Access box.

- Press enter after you
- type the form name.
- Clicking on the box will
- give you search options
13Clicking on a form in My Banner is a third way to
access a form
My Banner is a custom menu that you build
for yourself. Add the forms you use the most
for quick, easy access.
14Navigating inside a form
- Keystrokes See a table listing all keystrokes by
pressing Control F1. - Banner icons Click on Banner icons in the
horizontal toolbar. - Pull Down Menus Select functions in the pull
down menus in the menu bar.
15Click on items in the menu bars to reveal
available functions
Menu Bar Click on a menu item to see a drop
down box.

perform basic functions
Horizontal toolbar Banner runs inside your
browser. Do not use the browser icons while in
Banner!

18Auto Hint Status Lines
The Auto Hint Line tells what is needed in a
field, indicates certain errors, and verifies
that transactions are saved and complete. The
status line indicates where you are in a block of
records.

19Options Menu
The Options Menu leads to information related
specifically to an item. it changes from form to
form and block to block.
20Find a list of values for fields that have an
arrow box next to them.
Click on the nation arrow box to see a list
of nation codes.
21Performing Searches in Banner
- Searchable fields are followed by a drop down
arrow in a box. - Click on the arrow or press F7 to begin a search
- Select a field and enter data.
- Use a wild card to aid in your search.
- The Banner wildcards are _ and
- The underscore _ will look up one character
- will look up one or more characters
- Press F8 or click on the execute search icon to
perform the search. - Double click on an item to retrieve it.
22Person Searches
- Before creating a person or vendor in Banner,
perform a thorough search. - Search using the last name.
- Compare birthdates if available.
- Search using SSN if available.
- Use wildcards
- DO NOT CREATE
- DUPLICATE PERSONS!
23Form Names
- All Banner forms, reports, jobs, and tables have
seven-character names with the following
structure - Position 1 Identifies the system owning the
form, report,
process, or table - Position 2 Identifies the part of the system
you - are using.
- Position 3 Identifies the type of form, report,
process, or table - Positions 4-7 Creates a unique
four-character name description

Application Form Type
SPAIDEN is a General Person Identification form
from the Student System In Banner.
25Form Types
- Banner uses different types of forms
- Application forms Use these forms to enter,
update, and query information. This is the most
common type of form. - Inquiry forms Use these forms to look up
existing information to the calling form. - Rules form Use these forms to define the
calculations and parameters that impact
processing on other forms, reports, and jobs. - Control forms Use these forms to define the
processing rules for application and validation
forms at the system level. - Validation forms Use these forms to define the
values that can be entered in specific fields on
application forms. These appear in the List of
Values window.
26Parts of a Form
- A field is the smallest part of a form.
- Fields grouped together make a record.
- Records grouped together make a block.
- The key block is the main identifying piece of
the form - Blocks grouped together make a form.
- The driving block of a form is the Key Block.
- Think of a file folder. The key block is the
information on the outside blocks are the pages
within.

- Do not use the sign when entering data
- Use only on search forms
- Do not use punctuation when entering data
- Adherence to Data Standards is critical to
obtaining good report data from Banner. - Helps reduce creation of duplicate records.

Team chaired by Kyle Hyde. - Contains excellent guidelines for data entry into
Banner, effective search tools for avoiding
duplicate entries, and provides the defined
values for many validation tables. - Document is dynamic as other systems and modules
