Purpose

• Clear maintain airway
• Perform rescue breathing
• Limit potential for disease transmission
• Dont delay care b/c you dont have one

Suctioning

• Used to clear airway of mucus, water or blood
• It is the process of removing foreign matter by
  means of a mechanical or manual device

Suctioning Process

• Turn victims head to 1 side
• Open the victims mouth
• Sweep large debris out of the mouth

• Insert the suction tip into the back of the mouth

Airways

• Oral airway inserted into the mouth
• Used on unconscious victims
• Nasal airway inserted into the nose
• Maybe used on responsive victims
• Come in different sizes
• Use a resuscitation mask or bag valve

Inserting the Oral Airway

• Select proper size
• Grasp the lower jaw tongue
• Raise jaw insert oral airway curve tip along
  roof of mouth
• At the back of throat rotate ½ turn
• It should drop into place

Inserting a Nasal Airway

• Diameter of airway smaller than diameter of
  nostril
• Insert the airway hole should face septum
• Advance airway gently
• Do not force

• Like the disposable ones in class

Resuscitation Mask

• You were to buy this
• Dome shaped
• Increased air flow
• Adequate seal
• Reduce risk of disease

Bag Valve Mask

• Hand held
• Bag is self inflating
• 1 way valve
• Squeeze the bag instead of giving breathes
• Should be used with 2 person

• Advantages
• Higher O2 concentration
• Limits disease
• Very effective w/ 2 rescuers

• Disadvantages
• Difficult to use
• Takes longer to assemble
• Not usually available to you

• Attached to the cylinder to reduce the delivery
  of O2 to a safe level

Precautions

• Always check for proper flow
• Do not
• Operate around open flame
• Stand upright without being secure
• Use grease, oil, or petroleum products to
  lubricate parts
