Starting an Automatic Transmission Car
  • Make sure car is in Park
  • Parking brake should be set
  • Turn key to starting position
  • release key as soon as engine starts
  • Check gauges to make sure everything is running
    normally

Putting the Automatic in Motion
  • Press firmly on brake pedal
  • Shift transmission to Drive or Reverse
  • Release parking brake
  • indicate direction with turn signal
  • Check Traffic in mirrors and over shoulder
  • Remove foot from brake and apply gradual pressure
    to accelerator pedal

Slowing and Stopping Automatic
  • Check behind you
  • Remove foot from accelerator
  • Gently apply brake with heel on floor and
    squeezing the pedal
  • Leave transmission in Drive if short stop
  • In case of emergency use threshold braking and
    dont lock up the tires.

Starting a Manual Transmission
  • Parking brake should be set
  • Gear shift should be in neutral
  • Clutch must be depressed with left foot
  • Right Foot should be on brake
  • Turn the ignition key to start

Moving the Manual Transmission
  • Press brake pedal with right foot, clutch with
    left foot
  • Shift into 1st Gear or reverse
  • Release parking brake
  • Indicate direction and check traffic
  • Slowly let clutch up to friction point and move
    right foot to accelerator
  • Gently press down accelerator as you let up on
    the clutch

  • shift into 2nd at about 10 mph
  • shift into 3rd gear at about 25 mph
  • shift into 4th gear at about 40 mph
  • shift into 5th gear about 50 mph
  • To shift press in clutch, let up on accelerator,
    change gear, press accelerator as you let up on
    the clutch

  • Look and steer where you want to go

  • Car goes the direction you steer
  • Always look where you are backing, dont just use
