An Era of New Ideas
  • The 20th century in music broke all the rules of
traditional music. The styles of music went in
    several different directions. Composer Arnold
Schoenberg devised a way to throw away all of the
old ideas of harmony by creating 12-tone music.
All twelve tones of the chromatic scale were used
equally thus creating strange and muddled
    melodies.

Neo-Classical
  • Composers like Stravinsky returned to the
Classical principals of balance and form and to
music that did not describe a scene or an emotion.
