Trans-Alaska Pipeline System, TAPS

• 1958 The Territory of Alaska became the State
  of Alaska
• 1968 North Americas largest oil field
  discovered at Prudhoe Bay, Alaska
• 1969 June 6, TAPS owners announced plans and
  submitted a request to the Department of Interior
  (DOI) for a pipeline land-use permit
• USGS report on Some Estimates of the Thermal
  Effects of a Heated Pipeline in Permafrost
  prepared (published January 1970)
• September, Menlo Park Working Group established
• National Environmental Policy Act passed by U.S.
  Congress
• DOI denies permit request until permafrost
  problems solved

• Native Claims Settlement Act passed by U.S.
  Congress
• January, draft Environmental Impact Statement,
  EIS, released
• 1972 March, final EIS released
• 1973 October, Arab Oil Embargo
• November 16, President Nixon signed the
  Trans-Alaska Authorization Act, DOI issued permit
  for use of federal lands
• 1974 January 23, Secretary of Interior signed
  permit
• May 3, State of Alaska approved use of State
  lands
• April 29, construction began
• 1977 - June 20, First oil entered pipeline
• July 31, First barrel of oil reached Valdez
