• Community computer lab that has internet access
  and free computer classes for basic to advanced
  level programs
• Instruction for GED preparation
• Provide referrals to social service agencies

Employment in Athens County

• Poorest county in the State of Ohio
• Data suggests that many people in the county are
  working but not earning enough to rise out of
  poverty, producing a class of working poor
• Service and retail industry are largest portion

Workforce Investment Act (WIA)

• The Workforce Investment Act was passed in 1998
  to create a more effective national workforce
  development system. The legislation established
  a more comprehensive strategy for youth workforce
  development that moves beyond focusing
  exclusively on occupation-specific training and
  places youth development principles at the heart
  of services for youth

Barriers to Youth

• Youth have different developmental needs than
  adults and may need more intensive services
• Youth may be reluctant to enter and use
  facilities designed to serve adults
• Location and/or hours of operation may be
  inaccessible to youth
• There may be a clash between youth culture and
  the professional appearance of adults trying to
  help

• Develop important work skills such as conducting
  job searches, writing resumes, and preparing for
  interviews
• Identify and refer to community resources that
  can help with other needs
• Provide information about careers and the skills
  required for a wide variety of occupations

The WIA Youth Program

• Helps Athens Co. youth that are at risk of not
  graduating by building their academic and
  occupations skills and training
• Provides supportive services to get through high
  school and college
• Provides job placement, interviewing skills,
  budgeting and money management, goal setting,
  mentoring, referrals, and career assessment

• Athens County residents between the ages of 14
  21.
• Enrolled in Athens County School
• Enrolled or registered with Hocking College or
  the Adult Career Center
• Students with barriers
• Meet specified income guidelines

Apprenticeship

• Apprenticeships combine practical work with
  structured training to give the student
  nationally recognized qualifications and the
  experience they need for a quality career. It is
  a combination of formal education and on the job
  training

Job Corps

• Job Corps is committed to providing young people
  with the education and tools they need to develop
  and sustain meaningful careers
• Job Corps helps young people learn a skilled
  trade, earn a high school diploma or GED and gain
  assistance with career and job placement
• Students can enroll for up to 2 years

Americorps

• Americorps is a network of programs that assist
  with tutoring, mentoring, teaching computer
  skills, cleaning parks and streams, managing or
  operating after school programs, and helping
  communities respond to disasters
• Volunteers receive money for transportation and
  health insurance and after 10 to 12 months of
  service, a voucher to apply towards further
  education or student loan repayment

Civilian Conservation Centers (CCC)

• Located primarily in rural areas and provides
  young persons with work experience to help them
  conserve, develop, or manage public natural
  resources or public recreational areas or to
  develop community projects
