  • Heat of fusion- 0.05868 kJ/mol
  • Heat of vaporization- 0.44936 kJ/mol

3
FACTS
  • Hydrogen is the lightest element.
  • It is by far the most abundant element in the
universe and makes up about about 90 of the
    universe by weight.

4
HISTORY
  • Discovered in 1776, by Henry Cavendish, in
    London, England.
  • The origin of the name comes from the Greek words
"hydro" and "genes" meaning "water" and
    "generator
  • Robert Boyle published a paper in 1671 in which
he described the reaction between iron filings
and dilute acids which results in the evolution
    of gaseous hydrogen

5
HISTORY
  • The lifting agent for the Hindenberg ballooon was
hydrogen rather than the safer helium

6
USES
  • Commercial fixation of nitrogen from the air in
    the Haber ammonia process
  • Hydrogenation of fats and oils
  • Rocket fuel
  • Welding
  • Production of hydrochloric acid
  • Reduction of metallic ores

7
USES
  • For filling balloons (hydrogen gas much lighter
than air however it ignites easily)
  • Liquid H2 is important in cryogenics and in the
study of superconductivity since its melting
point is only just above absolute zero
