Status Update
  • Network has generally been very stable
  • Exceptions
  • ATM problems in Storrs residence hall
  • Continued poor behavior for dialin access
  • A few strange off-campus (OARnet or beyond)
    routing problems
  • Off-campus bandwidth
  • Increased by 12 mbps from 24 mbps to 36 mbps on
    March 23rd
  • Outgoing music file sharing capped at 16 mbps
  • Traffic shaping tool is installed and operational

  • E-mail
  • Move to new servers was completed March 12th
  • Will be increasing e-mail disk space quotas soon
  • New switch deployment
  • Leaf switches
  • Installation completed in Dentistry and Millis,
    user conversion to start
  • Soon to be installed at Cedar Avenue Service
    Center
  • Hub Switches
  • Installation completed at Bingham Hub and Health
    Sciences Hub
  • 2 FORE Powerhub 8000s will be recovered and held
    as spares
  • A variety of Cabletron equipment will be
    recovered and re-used in other locations

OARnet News
  • Commodity Internet peering now exceeds 1 gigabit
    per second
  • Pittsburgh and Washington, DC peer opened
  • Internet 2 will provide academic backbone for
    K-20
  • OARnet dark fiber acquisition
  • 1700 miles of dark fiber from Mission Networks in
    Ohio
  • 2 fibers at 4.8 million, option to buy 4
    additional fibers
  • Will use DWDM (Dense Wave Division Multiplexing)
    to support about 100 wavelengths at 10 gigabits
    per second per wavelength
  • Operational in about 18-24 months
  • Probable applications
  • 10 gigabit per second OARnet backbone
  • Video network
  • Other special purpose networks and/or
    point-to-point connections

Off-campus Connectivity News
  • Adelphia
  • Cable modem access now available in suburbs as
    Adelphia expands digital services, including
    Cleveland Hts and Shaker Hts
  • All suburbs to be completed by sometime in June
  • Planning to install high speed link between CWRU
    and Adelphia
  • DSL services available from a variety of
    providers in the Cleveland metropolitan area
  • Planning to install high speed link between CWRU
    and Ameritech DSL
  • Should CWRU consider reducing and eventually
    dropping its dialin access services?
  • Investigating upgrading OARnet link to 1 gigabits
    per second

Future Plans
  • VPN for authenticated access
  • Those accessing from the Internet would be able
    to authenticate to obtain the equivalent of
    on-campus access to network resources
  • Will use to secure wireless access to network
    resources
  • Hope to purchase and acquire before the end of
    the Spring semester
  • Hope to make operational during the summer
  • Switches for next fiscal year
  • Supplemental budget being developed
  • Perhaps around 15 switches to be deployed based
    on performance data
