  • Not sprinting when required to stay with active
    play
  • Recover From Deep Position
  • Not sprinting when required
  • Kept Up With Play
  • General Comments
  • All the above are related
  • Most are due to not anticipating or reading play
  • A few are due to poor individual fitness

9
REFEREE ISSUES NOTED
  • Attitude
  • Was Mentally Prepared
  • Respect For Players
  • Appeared To Enjoy
  • All The Above Are Related
  • Arrogant attitude both on off the field, by
both verbal comments and body language
  • Not receptive to assessor comments
  • Talking too much, trying to explain calls/no
    calls to coaches
  • Not assertive on the field

10
REFEREE ISSUES NOTED
  • Courage / Character / Consistency
  • Gave Decisions Promptly
  • Slow to indicate free kick direction (indecision)
  • Whistle to mouth, then no call made
  • Was Approachable
  • See Attitude
  • Easy to determine by gestures and body language
  • Consistent Decision Making
  • Lack of HS rules knowledge
  • Inconsistent on calls throughout the game when
    control was not an issue
  • Unsure what to call or not call (indecision)

11
REFEREE ISSUES NOTED
  • Position/Mechanics/Signals
  • Anticipated Play Adjusted Position
  • Not reading the game or getting a head start on
game flow to stay close to active play (wide
    deep)
  • Too rigid on diagonal took you away from active
play, or, running a center diagonal
  • Not deep enough into penalty area for attacking
    challenges
  • Standing
  • Not into AR quadrant to stay close to active play
  • Duals Getting inside players on attacks
  • Kept AR In View / Acknowledged AR Signals
  • Not looking to AR at play stoppages missing AR
signals due to referee play involvement

12
REFEREE ISSUES NOTED
  • Position/Mechanics/Signals (continued)
  • Well Positioned For Set Plays
  • Not varying set play positions
  • Decisions Clearly Indicated By Signals
  • Sloppy or incorrect hand signals
  • Made Best Use Of Whistle
  • Weak whistle gives impression of lack of
    confidence in yourself
  • No whistle to restart after sub
  • Constant toned whistle not befitting the foul
    severity

13
REFEREE ISSUES NOTED
  • Accuracy Of Decisions
  • Recognized Intent Correctly
  • Indecisiveness (was it a foul or not??)
  • Too far from active play to recognize fouls

    second
  • Out of position to see fouls
  • Dealt With Persistent Infringement
  • Same players commit too many fouls, or,
  • Same star player gets fouled by many opponents

15
REFEREE ISSUES NOTED
  • Game Control (continued)
  • Stopped Encroachment Immediately
  • Leads to time wasting
  • Not asserting proper authority early in the game
  • Administered Subs Correctly
  • Includes sub uniform check before entering, off
before on, on at midfield, players not going off
    their teams touchline
  • Players Accepted Decisions
  • Lack of game control why????
  • Made Effective Use Of Advantage
  • Too much advantage called when there was none
  • Not letting play continue to see if advantage is
    realized

16

  • Preparation is the key to a successful game
  • Equipment / Field Inspected
  • Players equipment
  • Fitness
  • Not moving to keep up with play
  • Out of shape
  • Not anticipating play, thus getting too far
    behind
  • Position/Mechanics/Signals
  • If you anticipate play, read game flow, do not
stand during active play, stay close to active
play, vary set play positioning, use a strong
    whistle, you should be okay.

17
REFEREE ISSUES NOTED
  • So, What Are The Main Issues?? (cont.)
  • Game Control

  • Be close enough to active play to recognize
    deal with first fouls

  • Players and coaches will then accept your
    decisions

30
HOW DID WE DO????
  • Overall Evaluation
  • Discovered areas that need improvement and will
work on those in the future during training
    sessions
  • Determined our Rating System is a good one
    relatively accurate
  • Found many of those officials that needed to be
    upgraded (which was done)
  • Need more assessors
  • To achieve this, we need more referees so the
assessors do not have to officiate all the time

31
HOW DID WE DO????
  • Question
  • Did you feel the assessment program was
    beneficial?
  • I would like to hear your comments
