2Locomotive
The locomotive is the vehicle that makes the
train move. It is usually at the front of the
train.
3Flat car
Flat cars carry many different kinds of cargo.
There are no no sides on a flat car. They can
carry machines, cars, and building supplies.
4Tank car
Do you know what is in a tank car? They are
designed to carry liquid. This tank car is
carrying oil.
5Box cars
Box cars can carry furniture and other big things
like that. They are completely enclosed or
covered. What else might be carried in a box car?
6Gondola car
Gondola cars are low-sided with open tops and are
used for hauling things such as scrap metal.
Where we live we see gondola cars carrying coal.
7Caboose
This is the last car in the train. It often
carries equipment and part of the train crew.
8Trains are for carrying, hauling and riding. But,
best of all trains are for watching.
