Title: Creating Concept Cards

1
Creating Concept Cards
  • Improving your learning
  • through effective study methods and practices
  • A CBNA Assisted Study Resource

2
What Are Concept Cards
  • Concept Cards are a method for creating an
organized summary of information in your own
    words.
  • You learn from them in three ways
  • Extracting information by reading it first
  • Translating it into terms you understand
  • Rehearsing it by re-reading before a test

3
How do You Create Concept Cards?
  • Concept cards are like detailed flash cards. One
side has a key word, phrase or concept and the
other has its definition or description
  • Concept cards are best for subjects emphasizing
vocabulary and definitions, like Math and
    Sciences, English, History, and Languages
  • Concept cards may also present information as
    drawings, diagrams or sketches

4
Concept Card Content
  • Write everything in your own words
  • Rephrasing things into your own words helps you
    master the concept
  • Include examples to help you understand what the
    concept means
  • Charts and graphs are helpful
  • Concentrate especially on the things you have not
    yet mastered

5
Concept Cards are used to
  • Summarize
  • ideas found in class notes or lab notes
  • Sections read in textbooks
  • Vocabulary lists
  • Handouts or study guides
  • Questions, problems, or homework assignments

A Sample Concept Card
  • Front side of Card George Washington
  • Back side of card Born 1732 - Died 1799.
First president of the United States. Created the
Continental Army, which fought and won the
    American Revolution (1775-1783). Brought final
defeat to the British at Yorktown, Virginia.
Might have used power to become king but instead
help gain ratification for the Constitution of
the United States. Reluctantly accepted the
presidency but laid down the guidelines for all
    future presidents.
