What is a mentor?
Definition Latin, from Greek word
Mentor Mentor was a friend of Odysseus entrusted
with the education of Odysseus' son
Telemachus. So we see a positive mentor is a
trusted counselor, guide, tutor and coach to
those entrusted to ones care.

The impacts of Negative Mentoring
  • People fell put down/boss stuck on negative
    criticism
  • Expects a Zero defects environment
  • Does not tolerate mistakes/failure/risk taking
  • Squelches creativity

How does one become a life affirming mentor who
helps others become champions?
He/she must possess certain traits as a mentor
  • Have a healthy sense of self esteem
  • Be able to derive a a measure of satisfaction
    and self fulfillment in human interactions
  • Be able to handle human conflict
  • Be a person of sound integrity/trustworthy
    individual
  • Posses the gift of unconditional positive
    regard for ones fellow human beings
  • Have the gift of empathy for others
  • Leads by example
  • Holds others accountable for their actions
  • Encourages a high level of excellence in all
    pursuits

How does one become a life affirming mentor who
helps others become champions?
He/she must possess certain traits as a mentor
  • Be competent in their profession so they can
    pass their wisdom onto others
  • Understand something about what makes people
    tick (ie..That healthy people respond best to
    positive affirmation)
  • Be open to learning new things and discovering
    better ways of taking care of others/solving
    problems
  • Have a resiliency of spirit that enables them to
    roll with the punches of life (sense or humor,
    faith in God, maturity gained from the school
    house of life, practicing the self care of
    meditation, PT, golf, vacations, and family time
    are all part of this resiliency equation)
  • Enjoys his/her work
