Title: Election Day

1
Election Day
2
When Election Day occurs
  • Election day happens after the second Tuesday in
    November
  • Last year election day was on November 6, 2005
  • This year election day takes place on November 7,
    2006
  • Next year election day we take place on November
    8, 2007

3
Why is election day held on a Tuesday?
  • Election day is held on a Tuesday because
  • Most American residents that lived in rural areas
needed time to travel to the voting areas (these
people start traveling on Sunday so they needed
    two days)
  • November was chosen because it was the month
    after the crops were harvested
  • If it was on Monday, it would conflict with
church services since church is held on Sundays.
  • Election day follows after the week of All Saints
    Day

4
Reasons Election Day was not held the first week
of November
  • The lawmakers did not want Election day on
November 1st since that was all Saints Day, which
is a Holy Day for the Roman Catholics. This is
the day that Roman Catholics go to church
  • Another reason was that the merchants were
looking at the books on November 1st and they
would not be ready (which worried Congress
because they did not want the economic to fail
and cause the votes to be influenced by that)

5
Why Dwyer school is closed on Election Day
Do you know why Dwyer school is closed?
  • Many people come out to vote and there is
concerns with parking issues and even security.
(which is why many schools have decided to close
    and consider this a holiday)
  • Each district has a choice whether to close the
school or to leave the school open
  • Schools close as a safety procedure "It's just a
safety precaution," Rumolo said. "We have kids
around the school all day. It's just a wise
safety move with kids running around, cars
pulling in and out all day. (http//www.phillybur
    bs.com/pb-dyn/news/104-10202004-386331.html)
  • "Parents have indicated to me that they are
concerned for the safety of their children
because even routine security procedures are
difficult to enforce when thousands of voters
will be flocking to the polls," Buono said in a
    letter to McGreevey (http//www.phillyburbs.com/pb

6
Why we celebrate Election Day
  • Election Day is important because that is when
people can make a difference on what is going on
    around them.
  • People have a choice on what they want to be able
to vote for and choose better aspects around
    them.
  • It gives many people the opportunity to voice
their opinions and show they care about what is
    happening around them.

7
Rules on Election Day
Does anyone know what rules are?
  • Rules are Established standards, guides, or
regulations set up by an authority.

Why do we have rules?
  • We have rules to remain safe and not cause chaos
throughout the world.. Without rules there would
be major problems occurring and many children and
    people would get very hurt.

Do you think rules are important?
The rules on the voting sites 1) Come to
where you go to vote 2) The people working at
that site will ask your name and give
you a ballot slip 3) Then you give them back
the ballot slip 4) Then you go into the
voting booth and vote.

Sample of a absentee ballot
What is an absentee ballot?
  • An absentee ballot is a ballot marked and sent in
advance through the mail to voters who cannot go
to the polls on election day.
  • These ballots are then sent back through the mail
    and then counted that way

The rules of a voting booth
  • Come into the voting booth
  • Press the button to the right of the candidates
of your choice and then a green X will appear
    next to your selection

    a new selection
  • If you wish to write in a vote instead, go to the
write in column and press the button next to
the write in. Then a blinking green X will
appear and by using the keyboard you can type in
the name of the person that you chose. In order
to put a space make sure you use the arrow on the
keyboard. (The arrow will be pointing to the
right). Once that is done you you hit the enter
button and your vote will be recorded.
  • When you want to vote on public questions, you
have to press the button to the right of the word
Yes or No and that is when a green X will
    appear next to your choice
  • After you are finished with all your selections,
