MAIN FINDINGS
5
Main Findings
  • Czechs do not have a clear attitude towards the
    EU
  • It is quite typical of Czechs to be rather
    unclear in their opinions
  • Czechs (18-65 year olds) are more likely to agree
with the idea of a United Europe (61) than with
the current structure of the EU (53)
  • nevertheless both agreement scores are not
    neither high nor convinced
  • The vast majority (83) think that we should
renegotiate better conditions of our membership
    of European Union
  • On the other hand about half (53) believe that
the European Union can help the country become a
    prosperous and modern country
  • We expect the majority would like to improve the
countrys political system and a part believe
that the EU can help achieve that
  • The EU is more positively viewed by
  • young, university educated, wealthier, with a
    right-leaning political orientation

6
Main FindingsAttitudes to European Union
  • 84 would like to protect Czech farmers
  • 83 wish to renegotiate the conditions of
    membership to the EU
  • 71 would like to have a certain proportion of
    Czech products in big shops
  • 72 people are afraid of the consequences of
    changing over to the Euro
  • 63 think that the European Union is only a place
    for more bureaucracy
  • 61 agree with the idea of a United Europe
  • 53 believe the Czech Republic gets less than it
    gives to the European Union
  • 53 believe the Czech Republic would become a
prosperous and modern country thanks to our
    membership of the European Union
  • 52 agree with the current structure of the
    European Union
  • 30 support the admission of Turkey into the
    European Union

7
Main FindingsSupport of European Union
  • 15-65 years old would vote for the European Union
  • but their vote would be inconclusive
  • rating of the current structure of the EU (on a 6
    point scale) is
  • 52 agree, 48 disagree
  • (if we take convinced answers only the score is
    22 agree / 23 disagree)
  • 55 are not really convinced either way
  • Czechs agree more with the idea of a United
Europe than with the current structure of the
    European Union
  • core is 61 -39
  • convinced only score is 34 -18
  • 48 are not really convinced either way
  • The vast majority (83) wish to renegotiate the
conditions of membership of the European Union
  • they believe we could have had a better contract

8
Main FindingsMutual Advantages and Disadvantages
  • Even though the support of the EU is not
convincing and Czech people believe we could
    have had a better contract,
  • a slight majority (53) believe that the
European Union could help Czech Republic to
become a prosperous and modern country
  • on the other hand 53 have a feeling that the
Czech Republic gets less then it gives to the EU
  • If we look in detail on the above attitudes
  • 32 people agree that EU can help us and that we
don't get less then we give to the EU
  • 31 people think thatwe get less then we give to
the EU and EU can't help us
  • 21 think that even though we get less then we
give to the EU, the EU can help us
  • 16 think that EU can't help us but we don't get
less then we give to the EU
  • We expect that majority of people in total
think that Czech political system need to be
improved and a part of them believe that EU can
help us even we get less then we give to the EU

Left-to-Right Political Orientation
37
Semantic scales of Left-to-Right Political
Orientation in detail
State should guarantee the primary health care
only and use co-payments Unemployment should not
be higher than in EU, subsidy should be paid for
job searcher only Retirement from the state
should guarantee the basic needs only, the final
living standard is on one's own - based on
co-insurance and savings Primary education only
should be free of charge, quality higher
education could have been paid by
school-fees State should rather decrease the tax
payments to the state budget and let the regions
manage their own resources State should not
affect development of branches, make any
differences based on size of the businessman or
region State should set the taxes as low as
possible so the many areas of social life is
supported not only by state budget Income taxes
should be the same for all citizens regardless of
their income level State should not regulate the
leases and the costs of housing should be set by
the market State should not monitor the cost of
living so much and should rather support economy
and competition State should affect the economy
only in exceptional cases, if at all Precautions
against organized crime should not affect
currently guaranteed basic civil rights Police
should not have more competence to fight against
corruption, fraud and financial crime than in any
other cases State should always have balanced
budget even if this implies restriction in
important areas
State should guarantee the same free of charge
health care to everyone Unemployment should be
minimal, state and councils should create jobs in
case of need Everyone should receive retirement
from the state to guarantee worthy old-age All
education should be free of charge and guarantee
the same primary education and the same
accessability to higher education to
everyone State should support the development of
regions from the state budget and control their
level to be comparable State should support
development projects for stagnant branches, small
businessman and poor regions State should set the
taxes for enough revenues even for support many
areas of social life Income taxes should respect
the social situation of a citizen State should
regulate the leases and cost of housing and
guarantee accessible housing State should monitor
the cost of living and compensate any increases
with social benefits State should interfere the
economy in case of economic downturn State should
effectively fight against organized crime even at
the expense of currently guaranteed civil
rights Police should have more competence for
more effective fight against corruption, fraud
and financial crime State budget can run a
deficit if resources are used effectively
