Beginnings

• People of Italian peninsula spoke the same
  language and shared a common history
• Region hadnt been united since Roman times
• Congress of Vienna laughed at their wishes to
  unite - controlled by Austria and France
• Giuseppe Mazzini set up a secret society and then
  a revolutionary republic in Rome in working
  toward his goal of a united Italy

Nationalism

• Although revolutions failed, Mazzinis efforts
  planted the seeds
• A united country made economic sense
• End trade barriers and encourage industrial
  development
• Risorgemento - Italian nationalist movement

• Wanted to join other Italian states with his own

The Struggle

• Emmanuel made Count Camillo Cavour his prime
  minister
• Used Realpolitik policies to strengthen economy,
  form important alliances (France) and end
  Austrian power in N. Italy
• Gave aid to Giuseppe Garibaldi and his red shirts
  to win control of Kingdom ofTwo Sicilies
• Quickly won control
• Seized Naples
• France withdraws from Rome, acquire Venetia from
  Bismarck, united by 1870

National Tension

• New nation faced many problems
• Distinct differences between North and South
• Disputes between Church and state (control of
  Papal States)
• Anarchists turned to violence in response to the
  conservative government (limited voting rights,
  social unrest)
• As population grew, many people migrated to North
  America for a better life
