Background

• Several KEVs (Key Energy Variables) developed to
  communicate and track energy efficiency of
  ExxonMobil Baytown Chemical Plant.
• Most KEVs reviewed once per week, often resulting
  in inefficient operations passing by time KEVs
  were reviewed
• Needed more real-time process to capture
  efficiencies

Program Development

• A program was developed to
• Compare each KEV to its optimum target
• Compute the financial impact due to deviation
• Communicate this information to console operator
  each day
• Allows for daily optimization and creates
  ownership of energy efficiency at operator level

Program Details

• 100 KEVs stewarded versus efficiency targets
• KEVs were developed using historical operating
  knowledge combined with testing and modeling.
• Existing plant data historian systems were used
  to build stewardship tools and a daily report of
  unoptimized KEVs and their financial impact
• Daily report prints out at operating console

• KEV rollout to operating consoles has
• Produced cost savings
• Created change in behavior
• Daily stewardship at console level ingrains
  energy efficiency into all levels of the
  organization, making it a daily focus activity
• Monitoring program makes credits for required
  maintenance work clear, reducing response time
• Monitoring has identified inefficient operation
  practices

Data collected from plant historian
Report prints out at console
Report reviewed by console and operations

Program compares process variables against targets
If target not met, financial impact is calculated
Changes made to plant operation to eliminate
unoptimized KEVs
Financial impact of each unoptimized KEV is
ranked and put into report
