4What are the reasons that caused the separation
of Singapore from Malaysia?
Step 1 Identify 3 causal factors. 1. Political
rivalry (impact of the Singapore State Election
and Federal Election) 2. Racial politics (effects
of the anti PAP campaign) 3. Effects of the
Malaysian Malaysia campaign
5What are the reasons that caused the separation
of Singapore from Malaysia?
- Step 2
- Give explanations and examples for each cause.
- Political rivalry (impact of the Singapore State
Election and Federal Election) - One of the causes is the conflict between the
Alliance and the PAP. - This is further shown in the 1963 Singapore
General Election and the1964 Federal Election.
Main topic of the paragraph
Examples or relevant events.
6What are the reasons that caused the separation
of Singapore from Malaysia?
The two parties had different views. PAP did not
have a communal approach to politics whereas the
Alliance had. In the Singapore election, the
Alliance did not win a single seat while votes
for PAP increased. This greatly upset the Tunku.
In the Federal election, the Alliance saw the
difference in the views of the PAP as a direct
challenge to its role in Malaysia. Although PAP
only won one seat in the election, the Alliance
did not want PAP to be involved in Malaysias
politics. UMNO was afraid PAP might gain the
support of Malays in Malaysia. Hence, there was
much conflict between the Alliance and PAP which
eventually led to the separation of Singapore
from Malaysia.
Elaborate and explain further.

7What are the reasons that caused the separation
of Singapore from Malaysia?
2. Racial politics (effects of the anti PAP
campaign) Another cause was the disharmony
between the races. Racial riots happened at the
Padang during the celebration of Prophet Muhammad
and other riots that occurred between the Malays
and the Chinese. These riots caused the death of
many civilians and curfews had to be imposed.
These riots were because of the conflicts between
PAP and the Malaysian government. The riots
showed the danger of communal politics in
Singapore. Racial harmony was affected due to the
fiery speeches that played up communal feelings.
This affected the safety of the people and
ultimately resulted in the separation of
Singapore and Malaysia.
8What are the reasons that caused the separation
of Singapore from Malaysia?
3. Effects of the Malaysian Malaysia campaign
The final cause was the effects of the PAPs
vision of a Malaysian Malaysia. PAP formed the
Malaysian Solidarity Convention to oppose to the
Malaysian communal based Alliance. They wanted to
create a Malaysia where every citizen would be
given equal rights and chances. There were
rallies, speeches and booklets to back up their
battle for a non- communal Malaysia. The views
between the PAP and the Alliance clashed and the
Alliance was not happy. They were worried that
Malays in Malaysia would adopt the PAPs non-
communal way of politics. The Alliance even
called for Lee Kuan Yews arrest. The clash
between ideas and the Malaysian governments
unwillingness to let PAP have a part in
Malaysias politics was one of the causes that
led to the separation.
9What are the reasons that caused the separation
of Singapore from Malaysia?
Make a stand by prioritizing causal factors
The most significant cause is the conflict
between the Alliance and PAP. This is the reason
that most affected the separation. Because of
their difference in ideas, the friction caused
between them resulted in the racial riots and the
campaign for a Malaysian Malaysia. The
unhappiness among the people was mainly because
of the conflicts between their governments. This
shows that the difference in political ideas
between the PAP and the Malaysian government was
one of the root causes that led to the separation
of Singapore and Malaysia.
State your stand- which is the most impt cause.
Why is the cause more significant than others?
