Power Point
  • The Basics

Where is it?
  • In Miller, you can find it by opening
  • Hard Drive
  • General Tools
  • Microsoft Powerpoint

Create a New Presentation
  • From the File menu, select New
  • Choose Blank Presentation (not template)
  • Select a Presentation Design
  • Select a Design, Click OK

First Slide
  • Title Slide
  • Many formats
  • Choose the one you need
  • Save to your disk
  • Summary Information OK
  • Add Title, Subtitle

Toolbars
  • Notice the names and explanations for the icons
  • Under the View menu, select these options
  • Common Tasks
  • Standard
  • Animation Effects

The Next Slide
  • Click on New Slide from the Common Tasks
    menu
  • (Dont choose New from the file menu)
  • Choose the format you like
  • Click type the slide title (the main idea of
    that slide)
  • Click below to add text
  • Press Return to go to the next line

Bullets
  • Add text without bullets (look at Format Menu)
  • Or
  • Add text with bullets
  • Type OptionShift arrow to move text up or
    down in importance
  • Bullets help organize your information

  • Click on New Slide again (from Common Tasks
    floating toolbar
  • Follow the same steps for all your slides.
  • SAVE FREQUENTLY!

Slide View vs. Outline View
  • View toolbar at the bottom of page
  • Select Outline view
  • Same commands
  • You can do all your typing in Outline
    view--some people think its easier

Slide Sorter View
  • Shows small thumbnails of all slides
  • Wrong order? To change the order of the slides
  • In Slide Sorter view or Outline View, drag
    the slide to the desired position
  • You can select and go directly to any slide
  • So, click on the first slide and

  • Select Slide Show View (at the bottom of the
    page)
  • Click the mouse to change slides
  • Ready for some special effects?

Transitions
  • Add a fancy transition between slides
  • You can have the same transition for all the
    slides in your presentation
  • Select All (Edit menu), then choose the
    transition
  • OR you can choose different transitions
  • Click on one slide and choose a transition for it
  • Transitions are on the Slide Show menu

Animation
  • Preset Animation on the Slide Show menu is
    the same as floating Animation
  • These add your points one-by-one, not all at the
    same time
  • Again, you can use the same animation for all
    your slides (Select All first)
  • OR you can have different animation for each one

To Add a Picture
  • In Slide Layout choose text or 2 column
    text. (Do NOT use the Clip Art format for
    photos!)
  • From the Insert menu, choose Picture
  • Find the picture you like and click on Insert
  • Change the size or position of the picture

To Add a Picture from the Internet
  • In Netscape, find a picture you like
  • Hold the Control key
  • Click on the picture
  • Save this image will appear
  • Save it to YOUR disk

WATCH YOUR PRESENTATION!
  • Select Slide Sorter, and click on the first
    slide
  • Switch to Slide Show, and click through your
    presentation

Printing
  • Under the File menu, choose Print
  • Look carefully at the Print What? at the bottom
    of the box
  • DO NOT print Slides (Save the trees!)
  • You may choose to print Six per page
  • You may print Outline
  • This will help you with your presentation
  • Print in BLACK (the printer isnt color)

  • Other basics spelling, cut/paste, etc.

  • Text color button and text styles/size
  • Drawing/Graphics
  • Insert graphs/tables
