1
GRAPHIC COMMUNICATION
  • Overview of Technology

2
Innovations in Graphics
  • 1868 1st practical typewriter is patented
  • 1888 George Eastman creates Kodak
  • 1902 Arthur Korn invents a method of
    electronically transmitting photographs using
    optical scanning.
  • 1940 Chester Carlson patents a xerographic
process. Xerox obtains patent and markets the
    first photocopier in 1958.

3
Graphic Communication
  • Sending messages using primarily visual means
  • Printing
  • Photography
  • Drafting
  • EXAMPLES photos, pictures, labels, signs
    newspaper, mags, books, mail

4
Visual Design
  • Refers to how something looks
  • To communicate a message effectively using
graphic media, visual design is extremely
    important.

5
What makes a Design Effective?
6
  • Companies and Organizations spend a lot of time
and money developing a recognizable logo. Why?
  • It captures the attention of the intended
    audience
  • Communicates a message
  • Leaves a lasting impression
  • Make a list of 10 logos you could recognize if
put up on the board. NO WORDS

7
Design Considerations
  • Function
  • Appeal
  • Old, young
  • Gender
  • Race
  • Etc
  • Where it will be seen?
  • Billboard
  • Mag
  • Newspaper
  • Looked at for years
  • Like a photo
  • What factors impact the effectiveness of a design?

8
Principles of Design
  • Balance
  • Proportion
  • Contrast/Emphasis
  • Variety
  • Rhythm
  • Unity/Harmony

9
Balance
  • Visual weight of images

The viewer must gain a sense of balance from the
design --- the space, type, and artwork should be
positioned to give the viewer an impression of
steadiness
Informal Balance Design may look different, but
they have equal weight to the eye
Formal Balance achieved when a line drawn down
the center of a design creates 2 halves that are
very similar to one another
10
Proportion
  • Size relationship of the various parts of a
    design
  • The sizes of type, drawings, and photographs are
    all considered carefully
  • Designer wants to give the right amount of
attention to space to each part of the message

11
Contrast/Emphasis
  • Techniques used to call attention to certain
    parts of the message.
  • Underlining
  • Adding color
  • Changing the size of type
  • Using arrows

12
Variety
Rhythm
  • Adding different things to a design to add
    interest
  • Addresses eye movement and flow

13
Unity/Harmony
  • Overall effect of the design
  • All aspects seem to belong together
  • Work well together
  • Works when color, type, and shapes are planned

14
Assessment
  • Select a product and develop and design a new
    logo for it.
  • Use the principles of design concepts learned in
    class.
  • Use the design consideration seen earlier in the
    presentation.
  • You can use the computer or draw by hand.
