STEM Economic Competitiveness
  • Concerns of Greater Philadelphia manufacturers
    about
  • Especially the need to increase the number
    quality of students workers entering the
    workforce with much-needed knowledge skills in
    Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics
    (STEM)
  • Delaware Valley Industrial Resource Center
    (DVIRC)
  • Forum emerged organically out of work being done
    in the region
  • DVIRCs 5-year old AET project
  • NSF-funded Math Science Partnership, et al
  • Regional Competitiveness, specifically advanced
    manufacturing technology companies,
  • Forum really took existing work in the region to
    the next level
  • DVIRC was also funded as a DOL High Growth Jobs
    Training Grantee
  • Result Regional STEM Talent Development Forum
  • Held in Philadelphia on June 26 - 27, 2006
  • Led by DVIRC, funded by DoL the Commonwealth of
    Pennsylvania
  • Planned co-hosted by NACFAM

3 Major Goals of the Forum
  • Dialogue for Action about what can be done now by
    regional business-education collaboratives to
    ensure the nations education systems provide a
    continuous supply of highly-trained Scientists,
    Technicians, Engineers, Mathematicians to
    enable the U.S. to maintain its global economic
    leadership
  • Identify which successful local, regional, state
    national program models can be used by Greater
    Philadelphia regional collaboratives to attract
    K-12 students to STEM-related careers to
    strengthen K-20 STEM education programs
  • Articulate actions that can be taken by Greater
    Philadelphia local, regional state levels to
    develop focused support for STEM education in
    K-20 systems so businesses have the talent they
    need to compete more effectively in the global
    marketplace.

  • Briefing Book of recent research reports sent
    in advance
  • Evening reception where the Regional Congressman
  • Emphasized importance of STEM education
    regions need to take ownership of this issue
    through actions resulting from the Forum
  • Offered to convene elected officials of the
    region for a briefing on the results
  • Morning Panel Sessions of experts covering a
    series of questions,
  • in a moderated discussion, including questions
    feedback from participants, on the following
    three subjects
  • Meeting the Science-Technology-Engineering-Math
    Education Challenge
  • Building a World-Class Education and Training
    System to Support Private Sector Innovation
  • Assuring the Global Competitiveness of the U.S.
    High Tech Sector

  • Afternoon Roundtables in a breakout session
    format, with leaders framing their topics within
    a series of questions distributed in advance of
    the Forum
  • The following roundtable sessions were held
  • Engineering Deans Roundtable
  • Building student interest in STEM-related careers
  • Integrating STEM-related programs at the
    secondary and post-secondary levels
  • Developing STEM-related Professional Development
    Program for Teachers
  • Sector issues/approaches to deal with STEM
    education
  • Integrating STEM into Incumbent Worker Education
  • STEM and Economic Development

  • Final report-outs and suggestions for next-step
    actions closed the Forum
  • Participants will be sent a copy of these
    proceedings this week
  • Draft provided to participants for feedback
    before finalizing
  • The Forum attracted 171 attendees from industry,
    education, government, associations and
    non-profit groups

  • Form a Regional Compact for STEM Education
  • Set common, quantitative, and aggressive regional
    goals and pursue them
  • Take Inventory of What is Happening Regionally
    and Disseminate it
  • Develop a Communications Strategy and Plan,
    including partner communications and
    communications to other audiences and
    stakeholders
  • Create a plan to radically transform classrooms
    and teaching through technology-based and applied
    learning
  • Create a regional plan to support teacher
    development
  • Focus energy on getting non-traditional
    populations interested in STEM education and
    careers
