    and Local Level

  • Iran is prone to many of major disasters
    particularly earthquake, floods and drought
  • Iran is one of the most urbanized nations among
    the developing countries
  • Floods are twofold comparing with 1960s
  • Construction methods are poor
  • Every 2-3 years one major earthquake occurs
  • Iran ranks second after Armenia in terms of
    number of deaths due to earthquakes between
    1980-2000
  • (UNDP World Report Reducing Disaster Risk a
    Challenge for Development published in 2003)

  • Effective disaster management system exists
  • Extensive experience in managing response to
    disasters
  • National disaster management plan enacted
  • Technical knowledge and scientific tools are

UNDAF is really an opportunity for the
Government for strengthening its capacity for
DRM.
  • Substantial amount of joint UN/Government effort
    is needed to assess the vulnerabilities and
    reduce risks rather than just dealing with
    consequences of disasters

    Team (UNDMT), for promoting a concerted and
    coordinated disaster and disaster risk management
    and closer work and support to the Govt. of I.R

    developing a "living" database on RH and other
    health aspects of disasters, data analysis,
    training and policy evaluation.  This includes

    commodities and training of logisticians and
    warehouse managers

    Management in DRM field specially in local
    levels,
  • Concerted and coordinated work among the
    Government and UN agencies and their partners
    from other sectors (civil society, academia,
    research institutes, private sector, development
    actors and international partners)
  • Using information technology and advocacy tools
    for DRM
  • Need to translate the existing knowledge and
    capacity at national levels on DRM into practice
