General Revelation Rom 120
  • Which model does it best fit?
  • Evolution or Creation

2
A Few Important Definitions
  • The word evolution simply means change
  • Micro-evolution is a TRUE process
  • Horizontal change ONLY in size, color, etc
  • NOT a change in Kind and NO new DNA
  • Macro-evolution is a FALSE belief
  • Vertical change into new Kinds of creatures
  • Microbes to monkeys to man with new DNA

3
Review of Views (Worldviews)?
  • Biblical Creationism
  • Pseudo-Creationism
  • Theistic Evolution
  • Atheistic Evolution

4
Two Types of Science
  • Direct Hard Sciences (Physics, Chemistry,
    Biology)?
  • Variables Physical, tangible, controllable,
    measurable
  • Repeatable (evidence in present / minimal
    assumptions
  • Hypotheses tested by experiment, lab test, X-ray,
    etc
  • Indirect Soft Sciences (Origins, Psych,
    Sociology)?
  • Variables Intangible, uncontrollable,
    immeasurable(past historical events, emotions,
    thoughts, will, etc)?
  • Not Repeatable (often from the past / many
    assumptions
  • Hypotheses test inferences are much less
    reliable.

Review Origins Outline
  • I. Significance of Origin Hypotheses
  • A. GOD (God of Violent Competition?)?
  • B. Graphae (Greek term for written
    Scripture)?
  • C. Gospel (Did Jesus pay our death penalty?)?
  • D. Glorify (Reflecting Whose Character?)?
  • II. Evidence for Origin Hypotheses

II. Evidence B. Science
  • 1. Introduction to Science
  • 2. Physical Science
  • 3. Biological Science

  •       1. Introduction to Science
    a. Visuals (Protectors vs. Predators, Dino
    Tissue, Fossilized Hat, etc)        b.
Complementary nature of science and Scripture
    reviewed
  •           1) Logical / Critical
    Thinking          2) Proverbs 1415 Hebrews
111 Faith based on evidence, not blind
faith          3) NT Greek - logos word /
    information, logikos logical          4) Jesus

created an ordered world that can be studied
    logically)          5) Scientific
Method            i. "Born in the womb of
    Christian culture"            ii. Demands
rational belief based upon sufficient supportive
    evidence        c. Limitations of
    Science          1) Hypothesis (Greek, hypo
    thesis underlying belief)          2)
Hypotheses can only be supported, but never
    proven.          3) Hypotheses are often
    falsified.          4) Theory hypothesis that
has been tested, supported, and not yet
falsified.          5) Law theory that has
been further tested, supported, and not yet
falsified.        d. Very Different Types of
    Sciences          1) Observational
    Science          2) Origins (Historical
    Science)

10
  •       2. Physical Science (Atoms to
Astronomy)        a. Astronomy (Origin of the
    Universe, Bara, 1st Law Thermo,
Starlight)          1) Origin of Universe (Bara
/ Ex Nihilo (First Law of Thermodynamics)
      2) Big Bang (Beginning or End)          3)
    Starlight, Time, and Relativity          4)

    Earth)          1) RATE Team of
    Scientists          2) Dating Assumptions (C14
    vs. Potassium to Argon . . .) (C14
in diamonds, helium diffusion in zircon
    crystals)          3) Catastrophism vs.
    Uniformitarianism             i. Global
    Flood              - Baumgardners Los Alamos
    Laboratory super computer model
    TERRA              - Rock layers (sedimentary
    deposition)              - Ice Age
    - Architecture of the Ark            ii. Fossil
    formation

11
  •       3. Biological Science (Atoms to
    Adam)          1) Atheistic evolutionists
cannot explain LIFE scientifically. 2) Origin
    of DNA (Biogenesis vs. Spontaneous
    Generation)3) Irreducible Complexity4) No New
DNA or New Kinds      No mechanism for new
DNA or new kinds of animals  - Natural
Selection is real and first described by
Christians  - Genetic change limited to kinds
at genus or family level  - Mutations are now
known to never create new DNA, but rather
cause a loss of genetic information.  - So
microbes to monkeys to men change is impossible

Science is Limited
  • Science cannot be the strongest evidence.
  • Hypotheses/theories/laws cannot be proven.
  • They can only be supported by tests
  • Many are eventually proven false (falsified).

21
Scientific Questions to Answer
  • Universe ? Ex Nihilo?, Bara? 0 0 ?
  • DNA ? Isnt spontaneous generation wrong?
  • New DNA Are mutations a source of new DNA?
  • Dysfunction Disorder? Death?
  • Earths Age Is there evidence for a young
    earth?
  • Global Flood What evidence supports this idea?
  • Fossils What produced fossils and rock
    layers?
  • Noahs Ark How big was it? What kind of
animals were taken? How could those animals
    fit?

Micro or Macro Evolution ?
  • The word evolution simply means change
  • Micro-evolution is TRUE simply means
    horizontal change (adaptation of populations
through natural selection), with only the sorting
of already existing genes. This is merely like
breeding dog types from a wolf.
  • Macro-evolution is FALSE assumes vertical
change beyond the species genus level is
possible by mutations that created vast amounts
of new genetic information to make new kinds of
creatures (microbes to monkeys to man).

24
Two Types of Macro-Evolution Theories
  • Gradualism claims genera, classes, phyla, whole
kingdoms originated through a gradual buildup of
new genetic information. But mutations dont add
information, so some evolutionists have invented
    a new theory . . .
  • Punctuated Equilibrium claims genera, classes,
phyla, whole kingdoms arose somehow by rapid
bursts of new genetic information, with long
periods of stability (meaning very little change)
in between these periods of sudden bursts.

25
Biblical vs. Non-biblical Views
  • Biblical Creationism six 24-hour days, about
6,000 years ago, no death before sin, a global
flood with earthquakes that formed most fossils,
rock layers, etc. Science and Scripture are in
    harmony. (ICR, CRS, AIG)
  • Pseudo-Creationism the six days long
periods no global flood, death before sin
    (Pseudo false)
  • Theistic Evolution - God designed evolutions
process of death and survival to create man from
microbes, using mutations and natural selection
    over millions of years.
  • Atheistic Evolution - No God is necessary
    (chance)?

Simple Candle Burning Experiment Questions for
Radiometric Dating
  • You observe a candle burning at 1 inch / hour.
  • How long has it been burning? How old is it?
  • Do you know how tall it was when it started?
  • Do you know when it started?
  • Can you be certain that no wind increased its
    rate?
  • Can you be certain no one stopped restarted it?
  • Etc., etc, etc, etc, etc,

103
Dating Methods
  • Relative Dating- relies on the Law of
Superposition. Tries to place geologic events in
    a sequential order
  • Absolute Dating- specific dates for rocks
Radiometric dating- based on natural decay of
    various radioactive elements

104
Radiometric Dating Principles
  • Potassium-Argon, Uranium-Lead, C-14 methods
  • Parent element (K) decays into daughter element
(Ar) over time at a known rate
  • Rate is called the half-life
  • number of years for 1/2 of pure parent to
    become daughter
  • Used to hypothesize dates in billions/millions of
    years
  • C-14 dating is for young objects only
  • Only works for organic materials from once living
    creatures
  • Used to date objects less than about 35,000 years
    old
  • Can only measure with precision to about six
    half-lives and C-14 half-life is 5,730 years

105
Radiometric Dating Flaws
  • Dates depend upon three assumptions
  • Rate of decay has been constant
  • possibly true
  • Amount of daughter element at start is known
  • unlikely
  • System had no external loss/addition of parent or
    daughter components
  • very unlikely over millions of years

106
  • Assumptions can be dangerous, especially in
    science. . . . . assumptions often graduate to
articles of faith religious beliefs, and new
observations are forced to fit them. Eventually,
if the volume of troublesome information
    evidence becomes unsustainable, the orthodoxy
majority belief must collapse. Emphasis in
    yellow italics added comments bracketed/underline

biology at the University of Queensland and
director of the Institute for Molecular
Bioscience. The Hidden Genetic Program of
    Complex Organisms, Scientific American, October
    2004, p. 61.)?

107
Dating the Earth
  • Many physical processes (not just radioisotope
measurements) can used be used to date the earth
  • All are subject to the same flaws just described
  • But most give a young age for the earth
(compared with 4.6 billion years), for example
  • Build up of salt in the ocean 76 million years
  • Build up of sediment in the ocean 15 million
    years
  • Build up of helium in the atmosphere 1.8
    million years
  • Decay of short-period comets 10,000 years
  • Influx of radiocarbon to earth 10,000 years
  • The majority of the evidence favors a young
earth, contradicting the time required for
    evolution to take place

The Geologic Column
  • The column is not the onion-skin textbooks
    describe
  • It rarely exists in entirety in one location
  • All types of rocks, minerals, metals are found in
    all ages
  • Progression of fossils through the ages
    documents evolution
  • But fossils date rocks, yet rocks date fossils
    (evolution assumed)?
  • Creation - column is result of world-wide flood
  • Sorting action of water (smaller fossils to
    bottom)?
  • Ordered destruction of different habitats
  • Mobility of life forms (smarter escape longer)?
  • Column illustrates a superficially valid
successional tendency, but it represents a fast
    time sequence, not slow
  • Mt. St. Helens has mini Grand-canyon created in
